TV: Boardwalk Empire Season 4: Episode #3 Recap (HBO)

Thursday 26 September 2013

TV: The Walking Dead Webisode Series Returns October 1st 2013

New York, NY – September 26, 2013
AMC’s award-winning “The Walking Dead” webisode series returns to www.amc.com and AMC’s YouTube Channel, www.youtube.com/amc October 1 with three new installments. The newest series – “The Oath” – was executive produced, directed and conceived by Greg Nicotero, executive producer, director and special effects makeup designer on the hit show.

In the three webisodes (7 to 10 minutes each), the lone survivors of a massive walker-attack, Paul (Wyatt Russell, Cowboys and Aliens) and Karina (Ashley Bell, The Last Exorcism), speed across the countryside, frantically searching for an aid-station, as one of them slowly bleeds out from a wound.  Finally coming upon a hospital that has not been overrun, at first feels like a blessing, but could soon turn to misfortune, as a seemingly benevolent doctor (Ellen Greene, Little Shop of Horrors) may hide a darker agenda.

Right on the heels of directing season 4’s premiere episode, Greg Nicotero focused his sights on the most ambitious “The Walking Dead” webisode series yet. “There’s walkers, gore and new threats lurking around every turn -- all the elements that fans ‘The Walking Dead’ will love!”

Nicotero further commented, “The webisodes give us a unique opportunity to see other parts of the ravaged world of ‘The Walking Dead’ while weaving in and out of our show.  The crossover between ‘The Oath’ and ‘The Walking Dead’ ties in one of the most iconic images from the series, and gives us insights and history to yet another timeline.  I had worked with Ashley on The Last Exorcism and brought in Wyatt and Ellen, who rounded out the brilliant cast perfectly.”

“‘The Walking Dead’ audience is passionate and enthusiastically interacts with the show and other fans online. Being able to develop new ways for them to experience the world of ‘The Walking Dead,’ like these webisodes, is a no-brainer,” said Mac McKean, senior vice president, digital media, AMC. “They tell a great story with high production values, and they perfectly complement AMC’s extremely popular ‘The Walking Dead’ digital experiences -- games, second screen experiences and interactive content.”

The previous two seasons of amc.com’s “The Walking Dead” webisodes have won back-to-back WGA, Streamy and Webby awards.  The webisodes are produced by Alloy Digital/Generate with Chris Pollack, Jared Hoffman, Greg Nicotero and Michael Petok serving as executive producers.

Hyundai continues its partnership with AMC and “The Walking Dead.” From the iconic Kiwi Green Tucson to Hyundai’s growing fleet of Zombie Survival Machines, including a fan-designed version to be revealed at New York Comic Con, the brand continues to play an important supporting role in “The Walking Dead” fandom.

“It’s great to extend our partnership with AMC again for ‘The Walking Dead’ webisode series,” said David Matathia, director, marketing communications, Hyundai Motor America. “We know fans can’t get enough of ‘The Walking Dead’ world and we’re excited to provide unique content before the start of the season.”

“The Walking Dead,” the most watched drama in basic cable history, returns for another terrifying and exhilarating season on Sunday, October 13th at 9pm ET/PT.  In this highly anticipated new season, we see Rick and the group of survivors fostering a thriving community in the safe haven of the prison. Sadly, in this brutal world, happiness is short-lived and walkers and outside threats are no match for danger brewing inside the fences. The group’s home and new way of life will be thoroughly tested, and their struggle to survive has never been so perilous. Season 4 also introduces several new characters including Bob Stookey (Lawrence Gilliard Jr., “The Wire”).

The premiere episode entitled “30 Days Without An Accident” was written by Scott M. Gimple and directed by Greg Nicotero.

After suffering unimaginable ordeals on the island, the Oliver returns to Starling City a new man -- determined to right the wrongs of his father and sworn to bring justice to those who've corrupted his city. But Oliver finds his crusade complicated by his friends and family. Overjoyed by his miraculous return, the Queen family nevertheless still trades on secrets that conflict with the Arrow's agenda. Oliver's return also affects his best friend, Tommy Merlyn, who will ultimately travel down a dark path; and the love of his life, Laurel Lance, who must somehow forgive Oliver before she can ever love him again. A dark and dangerous crime procedural with edge, intrigue and action, Oliver's story will be told from three perspectives: the Queen family, Oliver's harrowing ordeal on the island and the Arrow's adventures in Starling City. Showing all facets of the mysterious loner, this action drama follows the Oliver that disappeared, the one that returned and the one known as Arrow.

Jason Segel (‘Marshall’) & Alyson Hannigan (‘Lily’) HIMYM Interview

QUESTION: Which part of your characters’ journey throughout this whole series has been most surprising to you?

Jason Segel: In terms of a full series journey, they have done a lot of Marshall finding his chosen profession. I think that’s the big thing. We had a couple of seasons of turmoil, but Marshall and Lily has never really been in question as a couple, so I think the thing that has been most in transit with Marshall has been his career path, trying to figure out what he is going to do, and the choice between money and his ideals, and how best to be there for his family, and what’s more important: your family or your job? I think that’s been the running thing with Marshall.

Alyson Hannigan: They have given Jason some great stuff to do: the stuff with his father was really…

Jason Segel: Hilarious.

Alyson Hannigan: No! Remember: he died.

Jason Segel: Oh. Yeah. That was an amazing acting opportunity on a sitcom. You don’t normally get to do that sort of stuff. That’s the luxury of running for nine years.

Alyson Hannigan: That was amazing.

Jason Segel: That was really cool.

Alyson Hannigan: I’ve always just loved the Marshall/Lily relationship, and just exploring that, and the dynamic of a long-term relationship, and I just love our scenes together. I love it.

QUESTION: Do you think that relationship will always be happy? Should we ever be worried about Marshall and Lily?

Alyson Hannigan: Oh no. Just Marshall. Look who’s playing Marshall! No, I don’t think so. You can’t worry about them. Especially as we’ve seen them in the future and they’re together.

Jason Segel: Good point. I think they’re fine.

Alyson Hannigan: They may have a drinking problem, but that’s fine.

Jason Segel: I know! We look really old when we do the 20-year flash-forward. I am completely bald and I look like things aren’t going well.

Alyson Hannigan: They may have aged us a little too much. But then when we’re really old, I think we look pretty good.

Jason Segel: Yeah, we look nice.

QUESTION: One thing that fans of the show really love are the slaps. Can you talk about the slaps?

Jason Segel: It’s always fun when they work the slaps in, and I think having a finite number of them is really fun because you can count off what has been used up, and I really enjoy that element to the show.

QUESTION: Are you a Star Wars fan in real life?

Jason Segel: I enjoy Star Wars very much, and the Joseph Campbell metaphor aspect. I think they have taken a classic mythology and updated it for a new generation and a whole new era of science and technology, so I appreciate it very much in that regard.

QUESTION: But you wouldn’t use a lightsaber to carve your turkey in real life?

Jason Segel: No, no, no. I don’t want to get really deep into it, but these are Greek myths that are now translated into an era that children of the modern age can relate to, and I think that’s really remarkable.

Alyson Hannigan: And he doesn’t want anyone messing with his turkey.

QUESTION: They say never work with children or animals, but how is it working with a baby?

Jason Segel: Well, I’ll tell you this: babies don’t know they’re acting at all, they just think that you’re taking care of them, so they cry. They don’t care if it’s action or cut, they just cry a lot, or cry in my presence because I’m gigantic, and they can smell my fear a mile away. So we’re all learning. It’s a learning curve, me and this baby.

Alyson Hannigan: They are so cute.

Jason Segel: I hate to spoil the illusion that it’s one baby, but it’s actually babies. It’s a rotating merry-go-round of babies. And they are really scared of me. Really scared. I don’t know why. I don’t take the time to get to know them. They are prima donnas. Like, you don’t see me cry on set… anymore.

Alyson Hannigan: I have heard a lot of screaming. Did you hold them upside down again?

Jason Segel: I did not this time, as per your instructions.

QUESTION: Tell us about a favourite moment that you have from Season 8. The godparent game show stands out.

Alyson Hannigan: Oh, when we were trying to figure out who to name godparent for Marvin, and we had a giant game-show wheel: that was cute.

Jason Segel: Oh yeah, that was really, really cute. That was great.

Alyson Hannigan: Everything blends into one in my memory.

Jason Segel: It really does; especially because it’s been to some extent one continuous story. Standalone episodes like the cockamouse episode…

Alyson Hannigan: I was just going to mention the cockamouse! Was that Season 8?

Jason Segel: That was a long time ago. Season 2, easily. You remember that kind of stuff, but stuff that was about the kind of moving plot lines, they all blend together at this point.

Alyson Hannigan: We’re so bad at the ‘Name That Episode’ game.

Jason Segel: How I Met Your Mother trivia, we’d probably be worse than the fans, for sure.

QUESTION: You obviously all get along on the set, you’re really good friends. Do you make each other laugh a lot? Are there a lot of mistakes and bloopers that will end up on the DVD gag reel?

Alyson Hannigan: Yes, definitely. Well, Jason really likes to make Cobie (Smulders – ‘Robin’) laugh. Cobie’s the easiest one to get.

Jason Segel: She’s very easy to make laugh.

Alyson Hannigan: And Jason loves to do that.

Jason Segel: It’s a lot of fun on set, I must say, and we each have our own particular button. We’ve learned each other really well, each other’s laugh buttons, so it’s really a good time.

Alyson Hannigan: If Jason and I get each other going, it’s kind of dangerous because it takes a while to recover.

Jason Segel: This is my TV wife, you know, for like nine years now.
Alyson Hannigan: But the thing is that we’ve never taped in front of an audience. They add the laugh track in later, so our goal has always been to make each other laugh.

Jason Segel: Right, that’s how we measure if we’re doing well. Totally.

Alyson Hannigan: So yeah, we do try to make each other laugh.

QUESTION: How was it to finally get some interaction with the audience, your fans at the Comic Con panel, and being there with the show for the first time?

Alyson Hannigan: It was really sweet. It’s so cool to see all the people that care. I mean, some people camped out for like two days to be in there. It was amazing.

Jason Segel: And to just be there with this group of people. We all met each other about nine years ago now, and to be near the end of a run of something that was so special for all of us, and to get to see firsthand some of the people that the show impacted, who cared about it in various capacities, was just really, really exciting.
QUESTION: We finally catch a glimpse of the mother at the end of Season 8, how is Cristin Miloti and did she fit right in with your gang on set?

Alyson Hannigan: I love Cristin. She’s fantastic. She’s wonderful. She’s very sweet.

Jason Segel: She’s the coolest, ever. She’s like the cool kid. Honestly. She’s from New Jersey and she’s just really laid-back. She fits right in. She’s really cool.

QUESTION: Finally, looking forward, what milestones are you looking forward to in the final season?

Alyson Hannigan: Probably just the last episode. That’s also the one I’m most dreading because how are we going to get through that without just bawling?

Jason Segel: And the Season 9 mid-season orgy. Same every year.

QUESTION: You didn’t see that email, Alyson?

Alyson Hannigan: I think that just went to Junk mail.

Josh Radnor (‘Ted’) & Pamela Fryman (Director) HIMYM Interview

QUESTION: Hi Josh, why are you limping?

Josh Radnor: I’ve broken my toe. I’ve broken my fifth metatarsal. We’re shooting around me. I’m figuring that if we can hide three pregnancies, we can hide a broken foot! By the way, this is Pam Fryman, our director, who has directed almost every episode of How I Met Your Mother except for, like, five.

Pamela Fryman: Then I just wasn’t in the mood.

Josh Radnor: She was redoing her kitchen. She was not coming in.

QUESTION: So let’s just address exactly how many nightmare girlfriends Ted has had… have you kept track of all of the dates you’ve had on the show?

Josh Radnor: I haven’t kept track, but actually the fans are the unofficial record keepers of the show. Someone sent me a collage of all of Ted’s girlfriends, and there were a lot. There were way more than I thought there would be. It was two rows of photographs of all of Ted’s girlfriends. I don’t know how many there were, but it was shocking. And some of them I went, “Who is that?” like, “Oh, I forgot I actually dated that person!” They might have just been in one episode. But there have been a lot. Of course, it’s all fake, you know.

Pamela Fryman: The fans are constantly putting stuff out about Ted, specifically, so Josh is always seeing stuff about his character through the eyes of the fans because it’s always something. There’s stuff on YouTube. There are songs.

Josh Radnor: Yeah, weird musical montages and people splice together photos… what are they? Memes, is that what they are called? I know all the terms! So yeah, it’s weird.

QUESTION: Who has been your favourite love interest, other than Robin?

Josh Radnor: Some of them are just one episode type of deals – we have all had one-episode relationships! We’ve all had guest stars! – but some of them are very special guest stars that stay around for a little longer. It’s sad, because Sarah Chalke (‘Stella’) was so amazing, and Jennifer Morrison (‘Zoey’), and Ashley Williams (‘Victoria’). Ashley is the only one that they didn’t really turn into a villain at the end, to get her off the show. Zoey and Stella kind of turned into villainesses a little bit. But I love all three of those actresses. I guess, in some ways, just as a character, there is a soft spot for Ashley just because that was the first season; that ‘Drumroll, Please’ episode has always been one of my favorites, where they met at that wedding. So to have her come back and still have that buoyant, fun energy between them – there is just something great about that. And I run into Ashley all the time and we just really get a kick out of each other. That said, Sarah Chalke and Jennifer Morrison are pretty amazing people also, so I couldn’t pick a favourite, really.

QUESTION: You have such avid fans of the show.

Josh Radnor: Yeah, and I love the fact that the fans know the show better than we know the show, because we shoot an episode and move on. They watch an episode five times, or rewind, obsess over it, talk to their friends about it, and it’s more alive for them on some level. We’re just putting one foot in front of the other and making the show. So it’s great to go to an event like Comic Con, because then you really get a sense of the impact the show is having collectively. We don’t really get that a lot. When you’re in the groove with work, you got to work, you go home, it’s a very womb-like experience. We’re on this stage at the Fox lot and we’re shooting the show and you forget that it’s being beamed out to all these millions of people.

Pamela Fryman: I think it would be a little bit different if we shot in front of an audience, because we’d get some feedback every week and that would be great, but because we don’t, just to be sitting there at Comic Con thinking, “Oh my gosh, people are actually watching!” Even though you know they are, to see them and to hear that applause, and hear them laugh, hear the reaction, it’s very gratifying.

QUESTION: In the early stages, did you ever imagine that the show would go to this many seasons and get to this point that you’re at now. Do you remember the turning point where you felt like, “Okay, we’re really solid here?”

Pamela Fryman: I certainly remember early on waiting for that pick up and you didn’t know whether it was going to come. And then I think after our Britney Spears episode, which was a very highly rated episode, we just started growing in popularity. At one point we got a two-year pick up so we were like, “Oh my gosh!”

Josh Radnor: Some series explode right out of the gate and diminish in both quality and viewership over time. We were the opposite. I felt like our quality was always there, but we were a different show. We really introduced some stuff that is now commonplace in some ways. I was talking with Carter (Bays) and Craig (Thomas) last night about how there was this new fashion of serialized arcs, and that’s what Carter and Craig excel at, and what they always wanted to do: follow the locket or follow these different threads. The network initially was like, “No, do more standalone episodes. We want new people to just tune in and be able to watch the show.” But I feel like in some ways we just did what we did really well, and then the public mood caught up to us. But I think that the DVDs really helped, because they became things that people would pass around. It just gathered all this momentum. So it was quiet for those first few years, but I also had this confidence that it was just too good not to stick around. It felt like we’d got all guns firing on this show. And in some ways, because the network and the studio let Carter and Craig make their weird show and pick their music and do their thing, I feel like by the end, you’re at the top of the mountain and you look back, and you say, “Wow, we got to do some incredibly strange, amazing moments of television, because people weren’t paying that much attention at first.”

Pamela Fryman: I think that’s true. I think we did well enough in our time slot, then all of a sudden we had this young demographic and they liked that about us.

Josh Radnor: We were essentially brought in on some level to get younger viewers and we always did that.

Pamela Fryman: And to be able to have this last season and finish the story the way Carter and Craig always imagined ending it is so gratifying. It is sort of amazing that we’re even sitting here at this point… I don’t quite know how we got here.

QUESTION: You guys look like you’re having a lot of fun on set. Obviously, you all get along great. Do you make each other laugh? And does that result in a lot of bloopers and a gag reel for the Season 8 DVD?

Josh Radnor: Do we have a lot of bloopers? Yeah! We do a gag reel every year and it’s pretty long.

Pamela Fryman: It’s incredibly long.

Josh Radnor: The wrap party where they unveil the gag reel is always, honestly, one of my favourite events of the year, because a) you see how much we’ve done all year – you can’t believe it, you’re like, “That episode was this year? It feels like so long ago.” Plus b) you see just the level of loose energy, the comedic looseness on set.

Pamela Fryman: It’s just fun, and we don’t shoot the show in front of an audience so we are the audience. And we still make each other laugh.

Josh Radnor: Maybe some of the bloopers come from desperation, like, “Oh they laughed three times and they’re not laughing on this fourth take!”

Pamela Fryman: I mean, the actors always know their lines.

Josh Radnor: But we all have our moments where you think, “I’m a professional actor and I’m not behaving like one!” But let’s not go into it, Pam.

QUESTION: Can you talk about shooting that final scene with the mother that we now know is played by Cristin Miloti?

Josh Radnor: She was amazing. We brought her in and it was under cover of darkness. I mean, it was really top secret.
Pamela Fryman: And the great thing was that the first scene we shot with her when she asked for that train ticket, all the background people that we work with, our crew, writers’ assistants, everybody was in that scene, and when she walked on the stage we literally got to turn to everybody – because nobody had met her, even the people that we’d been working with forever – and we got to say, “Ladies and gentlemen… the mother!” It was thrilling for everybody because we’ve been waiting a long time.

Josh Radnor: And Cristin has such an easy-going personality that she’s easy to kind of fold into this very tight-knit group for whatever reason. That’s the luck of the chemistry draw. When they cast the five of us they didn’t know if it would all work together and for some reason it did, so maybe we have some good chemistry karma, I don’t know.

Pamela Fryman: She fits beautifully.

Josh Radnor: Yeah, she really does.

Neil Patrick Harris (‘Barney’) & Cobie Smulders (‘Robin’) HIMYM Interview

QUESTION: As this show has progressed, have you guys been rooting for Barney and Robin to make it as a couple?

Neil Patrick Harris: I have. I’ve been actively trying to make that happen. I talk to the writers and I was pitching it, and I’d try to do little things in our scenes together where I gave her an extra look and an extra glance or would stare only at her during a whole scene just to see if anyone was noticing. I thought there was a nice wrinkle about Barney liking the chick that Ted wants. Though really I was just hoping that I’d get to ‘F’ her once and get it out of my system, but it was a good ‘F’. It was a capital ‘F’!

Cobie Smulders: I just grabbed you!

Neil Patrick Harris: We had good chemistry. And I love doing scenes with Cobie, she’s super fun. She’s Canadian, you know. They’re cool.

Cobie Smulders: It’s all about being Canadian. I agree with all that Neil said. I think when she was in a relationship with Ted and it came up, and they were like, “You’re going to hook up with Barney,” I was like, “No way. That is not cool. They’re like best friends!” I got kind of weirded out by it. Then I just feel like in life these things happen. That’s one of the things that I love about our show: a lot of our writers take from their own personal experiences. At the beginning of the show, Carter Bays is Ted and Craig Thomas is Marshall. It is based on their lives. So it’s very much filled with their own life experiences. So I went that way in my mind of like, “Listen, this stuff happens when you’re a close group of friends, people hook up and it happens.” Then, once we got together, I really enjoyed working with Neil. I enjoy our scenes so much, and I feel like it’s a very interesting and comical pairing. People are always asking, “Who would you rather be with, Ted or Barney?” But Barney and Robin are just so different that I feel for both of them to decide, “All right, this is it,” is just such a wonderful choice.

Neil Patrick Harris: You always answered Barney, right?

Cobie Smulders: No. Ted.

Cobie Smulders: But it’s a hard thing to end, with Ted.

Neil Patrick Harris: I saw a lot of people being a little tired of Ted still hoping that Robin would be the one after we knew that she wasn’t the one. I’m embellishing on what Cobie said, but I think it’s nice that they’re actually playing it out like it would actually play out. Sitcom emotion tends to just end and they’re not together and then they move on, but there are feelings that do linger and even though the voiceover Ted, older Ted, has said that she’s not the mother, he still thinks that there could be something between the two of them and that doesn’t happen only once. That may happen three or four times. I like the realism of that in the confines of a multi-camera structure.

QUESTION: When you’ve played these characters for so long, for so many years, does the character and yourself ever bleed into each other?

Cobie Smulders: I’ve played Robin for so long now, the character has changed and morphed, and they try out things – like she yells at Patrice all the time, she loves guns but then she’s super emotional, then she’s super insensitive – so I’ve been able to have such an arc of the character, which I think is rare on TV. So I think that there’ll always be little parts of her that go on to other roles that I play. Robin was not a Canadian when I signed on for the show. She became one because apparently according to Carter and Craig, we’re exotic! Those were literally the words they used to me in Season 1. They were like, “Well, you know, I just feel like it’s really exotic,” and I’m like, “I have never in my life been called exotic!”

Neil Patrick Harris: I was thinking about that very question earlier – in the shower of all places – because I’m often asked, “Do they write Barney based on you?” but I think weirdly the opposite ends up being more true. Obviously we have conversations with the writers and they get to know how we talk and what jokes we sell better than others, so they write towards that, but I think it’s made me freer to be more of an extrovert and have a not-give-a-shit kind of attitude, having played Barney. Because you have to, as Barney, not only not care what people think, but go above and beyond that and just own things. I think before the show I was probably more hyper-introspective about what people were thinking and how I came across, and Barney has informed me in a way that I care less about that. So that’s good.

QUESTION: Could you talk a little bit about the proposal? You were messing with the audience!

Neil Patrick Harris: That was a long arc and I was concerned about it because all of a sudden Barney’s dating Patrice, someone that he would openly mock in previous seasons. They said, “Trust us, we have a whole thing.” I made them sit me down and explain what it was. It’s a whole long arc, even to explain that the last five episodes in a row were all one big long play, and we filmed extra little bits of scenes to pay off later. I still thought, “I get what you’re doing, but I’m worried that the audience at home are not going to like it, because there will be too many episodes in a row where they’re going, ‘Are you kidding me?’!” And yet it paid off so well. I just thought that was such a sweet thing: that playbook, the final play. So sweet for Robin and gave her such a great, wonderfully worded speech at Barney that ends with a yes to a proposal. That’s how Carter and Craig continue to keep the show fresh and good.

QUESTION: Was that scene emotional for the two of you while you were shooting it?

Neil Patrick Harris: Kind of. I think a proposal is different from a wedding. We knew it wasn’t goodbye. We knew it was a continuation of more stuff to come and we’re not actually becoming a couple, so in that regard it wasn’t emotional, but I liked that it was solidifying a future between the two of us just as actors.

Cobie Smulders: I also feel like the way it was played out, it was such a surprise for Robin – I went from pining after Barney to letting it go, to then getting really jealous. There was so much going on that when it happened – I think we had a few more episodes after that, right? – I feel like even in those episodes it was like, “Yeah, we’re engaged…” like we were still trying to figure it out between us.

Neil Patrick Harris: It was a stunner.

QUESTION: You obviously all get along on the set, the cast are really good friends. Do you make each other laugh a lot? Are there a lot of bloopers that will end up on the DVD gag reel?

Cobie Smulders: I break all the time. It’s actually something that I am working on. Right? Neil can attest.

Neil Patrick Harris: It’s tricky because when something’s really funny you don’t want to break because that’s the take you want them to use, and the minute your mouth starts to turn then they have to cut. And yet you don’t want to say, “Don’t do that funny thing that you’re doing because it’s making me break!” So you have to get into a whole headspace about it. But a fit of giggles is hard to squelch.

QUESTION: How are you feeling about the show coming to an end next season?

Cobie Smulders: How are we feeling emotionally about it? They are heightened emotions. We did our first interview where someone asked, “What are you going to miss the most?” and I was like, “I’m going to miss these people,” and I literally started to cry. On set it hasn’t quite sunk in. But I feel like it’s going to be just a really intense time for everyone.

Neil Patrick Harris: I’m a little more part robot. I compartmentalize things and I’m not a fan of goodbyes so I haven’t really contemplated it that way. I don’t want to spend the time that we have left on the show lamenting its demise, because we’re not there yet. So even though it’s run eight, now nine seasons, we still have 20-some odd weeks to do this and I want to make sure that we’re enjoying it as opposed to being wistful about it. But I’m trying to take it in more. Cobie said that earlier, that she’s trying to take everything in, in a different way, and I’m trying to do that. But this show has been an embarrassment of riches.
