TV: Channel 4 to air exclusive Dawn of the Planet of the Apes footage

Real-time viewer Twitter poll to dictate ad break content

In a UK broadcasting first, Channel 4 will air an exclusive  preview of 20th Century Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in an entire ad break takeover and then invite viewers to vote which further exclusive clip they would like to see broadcast in the very next break, via Twitter.

The initial takeover, which has been devised and developed with media agency Vizeum, will take place at approximately 9.27pm on Saturday 21st June 2014 in the first ad break of the UK premiere of The Hunger Games on Channel 4.

As the Dawn of the Planet of the Apes exclusive is introduced viewers will be told to stay tuned until the end of the break to vote for which exclusive clip from the film they’d like to see in the next ad break.

A call to action at the end of the break will ask viewers to cast their votes for one of two pieces of exclusive content they’d like to see in the next break by tweeting either #Humanstory or #Apesstory to @ApesMoviesUK.

Votes will be counted in real-time over the following 15 minutes. The next ad break will open with a live voice over announcing the winning content and introducing the further 60 second exclusive.

The six figure partnership was brokered by Melanie Ball, Partnerships Account Manager at Channel 4 and Robbie Ashcroft Creative Solutions Manager at Vizeum.

Create are responsible for the creative.

Sarah Francis, Media Promotions Manager, 20th Century Fox said:: “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is a huge release for us, we needed a big standout idea and Channel 4 have again delivered. We are absolutely delighted with this activity.”

Angus Mitchell, Agency Principal, Channel 4 said: “Fox were looking for an innovative way to launch Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and by utilising the immediacy of Twitter in terms of feedback, we are letting the viewer take control and decide what they see. We’re really pleased to be working with Fox again. The fantastic campaigns we are producing together show what true collaboration can deliver.”

Chrissy Totty, Head of Innovation, Vizeum said: “This ad break takeover offers Fox the opportunity broadcast immersive content through a real-time activation that uses social media in a truly unique way. Once again, we’re grateful to have worked with Channel 4 to give film fans the opportunity to shape the content around what they want to see.”

TV: Rick Mayall Tribute Weekend

Rick Mayall Tribute Weekend
Saturday 28th June and Sunday 29th June, from 9pm

Gold was saddened to hear about the death of Rik Mayall, who died recently at the age of 56.

Rik, who regularly appears on many classic Gold shows, first found success in the early 80s performing alongside the likes of Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and long-term comedy partner Adrian Edmondson at The Comic Strip club in London.

That success led to The Comic Strip Presents TV series which debuted on Channel 4 in 1982 with Famous Five parody Five Go Mad In Dorset. The show continued for a further 40 episodes with the most recent, Five Go To Rehab, premiering on Gold in November 2012.

1982 also saw the launch of cult sitcom The Young Ones, in which Rik played poetry-writing anarchist Rick. More iconic roles followed in series including The New Statesman, Blackadder and films such as Drop Dead Fred. In 1991 he teamed up with Adrian Edmondson again for the classic comedy series Bottom. It ran for three hugely successful series and five best-selling live stage shows.

Gold pays tribute to Rik the best way it can, by showing some of the classic British comedies that Rik was such a huge part of. RIP Rik.

TV: Submarine: Mission Impossible UK Premiere Tuesday 1st July, 9pm

Submarine: Mission Impossible
UK Premiere
Tuesday 1st July, 9pm

This is the gripping story of a submarine with an awesome history, thought lost forever, and the ambitious plans to raise her. It combines a hazardous underwater expedition, with the spine-tingling tale of one of the most audacious missions ever undertaken by a submarine.

Submarine Mission Impossible traces the incredible but true story of the submarine AE2 and her crew; combining a nail-biting dramatised account of their terrifying dive into enemy territory, with a modern-day scientific expedition to determine if the submarine can be saved – 92 years after being sunk in Turkish waters.

In April 1925, the Allies are poised to launch a major landing on the nearby Gallipoli peninsula. Their objective is to open up a new front and knock Turkey out of the war. Crucial to this plan, Lt. Commander Henry Stoker and the crew of AE2 are ordered to break through the heavily defended Dardanelles Straits and wreak havoc on Turkish supply lines.

It was a mission many considered impossible and sure enough on 30th April AE2 was sunk by cannon fire from a Turkish gunboat, never to be seen again… until now. The AE2 was rediscovered in 1998 by a team of Turkish divers, lying in 75 metres of water on the bottom of the Sea of Marmara. After 90 years submerged in salt water, she was deteriorating fast and in 2007 an archaeological expedition was mounted to determine whether the corrosion and damage to AE2's hull had passed the point of no return, or if she could be saved.
