REVIEW: Arrow - Season 5

Review by Jon Donnis
Let me put all my cards on the table before I go forward with my review. I watched season 1/2 of Arrow, and then tuned out half way through season 3, I felt like the show was losing something, and was going down the route of too much "relationships" and "love stories" which I simply am not interested in when watching what is a superhero action show. But after missing out on season 4 completely, I decided to give the show another chance for season 5, one reason was I had a gap in my viewing schedule, and another reason is that I figured that the fact the show kept getting renewed might mean that not only was I missing something but that I really should give it another try, and I am glad I did.

I watched a few catchup trailers, read a few recaps, and managed to catch myself up on what I had missed.

Oliver Queen is now the Mayor, and in season 5 he is fighting against the bad guys as the Green Arrow but also as the Mayor. His team has split up, and it is pretty much just him and Felicity, but as the season progresses we get new heroes stepping up, and wanted to help defend the city. Of course this brings it's own set of problems for Oliver to deal with, and much of the season is very much him trying to come to grips with things and finding the best way to move forward.

And don't forget we have the crossover episodes too with Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow and The Flash, so if you are fans of those shows then you will love the crossover episodes.

Season 5 made me a fan again of Arrow, and I cant say any more than that. Now I need to go back and watch Season 4 and truly catch up on what I have missed.

You can buy season 5 of Arrow from Amazon using the link below which opens in a new window.
Arrow - Season 5 [DVD] [2017]

Synopsis
After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen (series star STEPHEN AMELL) was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the North China Sea. Oliver returned home to Star City, bent on righting the wrongs of his family and fighting injustice.

As the Green Arrow, he protects his city with the help of former soldier John Diggle (series star DAVID RAMSEY), computer science expert Felicity Smoak (series star EMILY BETT RICKARDS), his vigilante-trained sister Thea Queen (series star WILLA HOLLAND), former police captain Quentin Lance (series star PAUL BLACKTHORNE) and brilliant inventor Curtis Holt (new series regular ECHO KELLUM). Newly appointed Mayor Oliver Queen finds himself challenged as he fights on two fronts for the future of Star City. With Diggle back in the military and Thea adamant about hanging up her hood as Speedy, Team Arrow is down to just Oliver and Felicity -- but they're no longer the only vigilantes in town.

The Green Arrow's public defeat of Damien Darhk (guest star NEAL McDONOUGH) at the end of Season Four has inspired a new crop of masked heroes to step up and defend the city, though their painful inexperience makes them obstacles, rather than allies, in the field. The arrival of a deadly new adversary will force Oliver to confront questions about his own legacy, both as mayor and as the Green Arrow.

The Best Archers in Pop Culture

The likes of Arrow, Katniss and, erm, Cupid might make it look like easy business, but archery seems like tense work. The slightest distraction can cause catastrophic effect - and where does the seemingly endless supply of arrows even come from? We’ll probably never know.

To celebrate the release of Arrow: The Complete Fifth Season on Blu-ray™ and DVD, we’re focusing our attention towards some of the greatest archers in pop-culture, so grab your imaginary bow and cast an eye over this hit list…

Green Arrow
Demonstrating that even superheroes have heroes, Oliver Queen grew up idolising Robin Hood, who’s pretty good as far as role models go (imagine if he’d chosen a pop star). After great practice, he launched into his crime-fighting superhero alter-ego, deploying various impressive tricks with his bow and arrows to hook us all…

Legolas (Lord of the Rings)
J.R.R. Tolkien first described Legolas as ‘a strange Elf, clad in green and brown’ in The Fellowship of the Ring, but these days he’s more likely to be thought of as ‘Orlando Bloom’, who pierced our hearts with joy when he first appeared on-screen in 2001. Whether he’s strange or Bloomin’ hot, or a bit of both, Leglos is an unstoppable fighter and undoubtedly the most skilled bow user in the history of Middle-earth.

Merida (Disney’s Brave)
She’s Disney’s first Scottish princess - and our favourite one ever thanks to her fierce independence and refusal to conform to stereotypes. While her parents want her to become a proper royal lady, Princess Merida is much happier perfecting archery, which comes in pretty handy when a beastly curse is cast and she has to rely on her trusty bow and arrow to save the day.

Katniss Everdeen (The Hunger Games)
Unlike Arrow’s Oliver Queen, Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist of the Hunger Games trilogy, wasn’t born into riches. Quite the contrary - she only took up archery in the first place to feed her family. However, the 16-year-old’s skill comes in very handy when she volunteers to take her younger sister’s place as a ‘tribute’ in the 74th Hunger Games. It helps that she’s played by Jennifer Lawrence onscreen, but nevertheless, we bow down to this woman.

Robin Hood
By robbing from the rich and giving to the poor, Robin Hood gained cult status as a heroic re-distributor of wealth. However, the outlaw of Sherwood Forest is just as well known for his impressive archery skill. It certainly caught the eye of fanboy Arrow (not literally). Hood’s legendary status is reflected by the fact he’s been portrayed by endless actors onscreen, with Margot Robbie lined up to star in a female-driven reboot. Hooray.

HawkEye (Marvel)
Much like Arrow alter-ego Oliver Queen, Clint Barton lost his parents at a young age. After fleeing his orphanage, he joined a travelling circus where he discovered a natural ability for archery and became a star attraction called ’Hawkseye’. Despite his heroics with a bow and arrow, we liked it best when he took a successful aim at Black Widow’s heart - in the romantic sense, of course.

Arrow: The Complete Fifth Season arrives on Blu-ray™ and DVD September 18

Superheroes without Superpowers

Fancy a career change? Inspired by the upcoming release of Arrow: The Complete Fifth Season on Blu-ray™ and DVD, we’ve been pondering how easy it is to move into the superhero profession… Considering how many people have made it without actually possessing a ‘superpower’ (i.e being born on another planet or getting involved in a freak lab accident), we’re thinking it’s not entirely impossible. Pretty impossible, but not entirely. Take a look at this lot…

Arrow
Oliver Queen, the infamous billionaire playboy turned outspoken politician, but in the guise of Arrow he’s a vigilante superhero who fights crime using archery, a skill he picked up on safari as a child. It makes you wonder why you wasted all that time on flute lessons, doesn’t it?

Batman
After the brutal murder of his parents, the mischievous Bruce Wayne trains himself up to mental and physical perfection, which frankly walks all over that time you taught yourself how to put together some flat pack furniture from a YouTube tutorial. If this doesn’t prove that practice makes perfect, we don’t know what does.

Green Lantern
Arguably offering the easiest way of becoming a superhero, the Green Lantern gained his powers from a Power Ring. This snazzy piece of jewellery gives the wearer the potential to harness a huge amount of power, but they must have the will and imagination to back it up, which is actually trickier than it sounds.

Iron Man
After being wounded in a war zone, eccentric billionaire playboy (we’re noticing a theme here) Tony Stark builds an armoured suit to escape his captors, which he later utilised back home to launch himself into superhero alter ego Iron Man. At this point we’re wondering if it would be easier to get bitten by a radioactive spider…

Black Widow
She might not have actual superpowers, but Natasha Romanoff (code name Black Widow) is badass. The former agent of S.H.I.E.L.D and Avengers founder is an expert in everything from martial arts to computer hacking. So much more than just a triple threat, she makes our CV look like a piece of loo paper.
