Dr Christian returns to W for a series of special clinics

Dr Christian Jessen returns to W, UKTV's premium entertainment channel, for a brand-new series. Dr Christian: Special Clinics (6x60') follows on from Dr Christian Will See You Now, with the nation's favourite doctor returning to his clinic but this time focusing on particular themes each week. This new series is an addition to the ever-growing Dr Christian franchise on W.

Each episode of the UKTV Original, from Firecracker Films, will see Dr Christian, plus his team of specialists roll up their sleeves to treat members of the public who are desperate for medical help. This time, he'll also be joined by his partner from Dr Christian: 12 Hours to Cure Your Street, Dr Sara Kayat (GP's Behind Closed Doors). In a new twist, all the clinics will have a particular theme, giving the doctors a chance to treat some extraordinary cases of people who, for whatever reason, aren't getting the treatment they need. From sexual health to body issues, infertility and pregnancy, obesity to service members who have been injured in combat, Britain's medical problems will be laid bare, with viewers getting an insight into these extraordinary stories - and the people behind them.

As ever, Dr Christian and Dr Sara Kayat will delve deeper into the devastating impact medical conditions can have on both patients and their loved ones and will pull out all the stops to help people get their lives and relationships back on track.

In addition, Dr Christian: 12 Hours to Cure Your Street and Emma Willis: Delivering Babies (both produced by Firecracker), Inside The Vets, as well as two scripted series - Women on the Verge and Flack, starring Anna Paquin, are all airing on W in the coming months.

Women on the Verge, a brand new scripted comedy drama starring Kerry Condon, Nina Sosanya and Eileen Walsh has today announced the rest of the cast joining the series including film star Catherine McCormack (Braveheart, 28 Weeks Later), Emmett Scanlan (The Fall, Safe), Yasmine Akram (Sherlock, Stella), Valene Kane (The Fall, Rogue One) and Owen McDonnell (Paula, Mount Pleasant). The series will air on UKTV's premium entertainment channel W later this year.

Women on the Verge is written by Lorna Martin, based on her best-selling book Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which was in turn based on her much loved Grazia column 'Conversations With My Therapist'.

Kerry Condon (Three Billboards, Rome, Better Call Saul), Nina Sosanya (Marcella, W1A, Last Tango in Halifax) and Eileen Walsh (Catastrophe, Patrick Melrose) lead. The project was picked up in 2011 by Sharon Horgan, who has since been working with Lorna to turn the subject matter into a frank, hilarious and often shocking half-hour UKTV Original series which will air on W later this year.

Set in Dublin, Women on the Verge tells the darkly comic tale of three friends, all career women in their 30's at various stages of their lives, who share the same nagging concern - that whilst their friends and colleagues seem to be increasingly in control of their lives, their own seem to be moving in the exact opposite direction.

Kerry Condon will play Laura, who is in the process of potentially ruining her career in investigative journalism by sleeping with her boss Kieran, played by Emmett Scanlan. Her ambitions take a knock however when she appears to be supplanted in his affections by a bright and talented young blogger called Samara, played by Yasmine Akram. Catherine McCormack plays the newspaper's editor, Claire.

Laura is persuaded by Katie, played by Nina Sosanya, to seek professional help for her many issues in the form of a long-term commitment to intensive psychotherapy with the enigmatic 'Dr F' - who will be played by Sharon Horgan.

Divorced and single, Katie has recently contemplated a course of IVF in order to 'complete' her family without a man and offer a much longed for sibling for her young daughter Ella, played by Hannah Adeogun. It doesn't help when her ex Rory, played by Lochlann O'Mearain, and his new wife Siobahn, played by Valene Kane, announce they are expecting.

Meanwhile, Alison, played by Eileen Walsh, completes the trio as a character who, after a series of disastrous and border-line scary Tinder-based one-night stands finds herself back together with her ex Martin, played by Aaron McCusker. Alison is hooked up to an electronic device that measures her fertility cycle and describes sex with Martin as 'not too bad really, now that there's some sort of point to it'.

Also starring are Jonathan Forbes, Jonny Holden and India Mullen.

The series, produced by Sharon Horgan and Clelia Mountford's Merman alongside Juliette Howell and Tessa Ross of House Productions, will be distributed by Sky Vision.

Women on the Verge will air on W in the Autumn.

UKTV's award-winning comedy channel Dave has commissioned brand new panel show Hypothetical (8x60'). The innovative new format will be hosted by Josh Widdicombe and James Acaster.

Produced by Hat Trick Productions, this new show will test two teams of comedians on their ability to deal with a series of ridiculous Hypothetical scenarios:

You have to live in a motorway services for a year, how do you cope?

You have to take a selfie with Nicolas Cage within 48 hours or you die - how do you do it?

You've been booked for the Royal Variety Performance with an hour to spare - you can't do comedy - what do you do?

Each hypothetical will be posed by Josh while James' job is to enforce ridiculous rules and score the guests' attempts at dealing with them. None of the guests see the hypotheticals beforehand and Josh and James take great delight in throwing them curveballs as the show progresses - it's a proper comedic work-out.


Josh Widdicombe said,

I have spent the last decade of my life annoying other comics with these questions in cars and dressing rooms so I am delighted Dave have allowed me to claim that I was in fact researching a show and not just wasting everyone's time. More to the point I cannot wait to work alongside the man who makes me laugh more than anyone else in comedy. I just hope this goes better than our 2009 Edinburgh show (one star, Three Weeks magazine).


James Acaster said,

The only thing that isn't hypothetical about Hypothetical is how awesome it's going to be. It's the show Josh was born to host and the show I was adopted into in order to help out with. The guests are top notch, the questions are first class and answers are guaranteed to be craaaazzzzzzyyyyy!!!!!


Every hypothetical results in a hugely entertaining discussion (with plenty of play-at-home fun on offer), as well as in-studio stunts, hilarious archive, location VT's and even the odd celebrity cameo.

The series has been ordered by Richard Watsham, UKTV's director of commissioning and Steve North, genre general manager for entertainment and comedy, for comedy channel Dave, overseen by channel director Luke Hales. Hypothetical is commissioned by UKTV commissioning editor, Joe McVey who will also executive produce alongside Stu Mather at Hat Trick Productions. Sophie Le Good will produce.


Joe McVey said,

When I was pitched Hypothetical my first thought was 'Seriously, no-one's given Josh Widdicombe his own comedy ents show on TV before?'. It's therefore a real testament to Dave that he's come to us and obviously we bit his hand off. And as it's being produced by Stu Mather we bit his other hand off. Fortunately, he's assisted by James Acaster so a lack of hands shouldn't be a problem.


Luke Hales added:

We are really happy to be welcoming Josh and James to the channel as they are perfectly suited to Dave's brand of smart wit. We loved the format when it landed on our desks - in a world of semi-scripted panel shows it really stood out from the pack and felt fresh and different. The format forces improvisation and you get to see the comics thinking on their feet and making it up as they go along. It's really fun, really funny and very smart.

UKTV statement on Virgin Media

Around four million households are no longer able to watch 10 of the country's best-known TV channels after Virgin Media stopped offering the UKTV portfolio at midnight on Saturday.

The move means that Virgin Media customers miss out on channels including Dave, Alibi, Drama and Gold, as well as favourite shows such as Taskmaster, Judge Romesh, Harrow and Red Dwarf. In addition to the live channels, Virgin Media will no longer provide access to thousands of hours of programmes from UKTV to watch on demand.

The two companies were unable to reach an agreement on a new distribution deal after Virgin Media demanded a huge cut in the fees paid to UKTV. Since the news broke last week hundreds of Virgin Media customers, who faced an increase of up to £48.00 in their annual subscription last November, have taken to social media to express their unhappiness about losing their favourite channels.

Virgin Media have now confirmed that they have replaced UKTV's channels slots with alternative channels, many of which sit lower on the EPG.

Prior to the switch-off, UKTV's channels were some of the most popular on the Virgin Media platform. Alibi and Gold were two of Virgin's top three pay entertainment channels, while Good Food was the top pay lifestyle channel. Overall, UKTV accounts for more than a quarter of all viewing to pay entertainment channels in Virgin's basic pay TV package and its on demand views grew by more than a third in the last year.

Contrary to some reports, UKTV supplied thousands of hours of on demand programming to the platform, including its biggest shows such as Taskmaster and Most Haunted. UKTV also offered to significantly increase the volume; offering thousands of extra catch up hours and hundreds of boxset hours to Virgin Media.

Darren Childs, Chief Executive of UKTV, said,
We're hugely disappointed for the many customers who are losing out because our channels are no longer available through Virgin Media. We completely understand their frustration and would love to continue to bring them the shows and channels that they're so passionate about, but we need a fair price to support our growing investment in programmes. The reality is that we just can't accept the drastic price cut that Virgin wants.

We remain completely committed to our viewers and appreciate the thousands of messages of support that we have received. We will continue to serve our viewers through our many platform partners.

The ten UKTV channels previously on the Virgin Media platform are Alibi, Gold, W, Eden, Good Food, Dave, Yesterday, Drama, Really and Home. If Virgin Media customers want to continue to watch these channels, they are available on other TV platforms including Sky, BT, Talk Talk, as well as Freeview and Freesat. Viewers can also catch up on their favourite shows online at UKTV Play.

The film received multiple award nominations, as well as winning the 2012 Evening Standard British Film Award for Most Promising Newcomer.Most recently, he's worked on series 1 and 2 of the BAFTA-nominated Channel 4 comedy/drama show Flowers, starring Olivia Colman (Broadchurch, The Night Manager) and Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh, Nathan Barley). Helping to create a dark and eerie world with his use of strings and piano, his score for the first series won him the 2016 RTS Craft & Design Award for Best Original Music; while the second series saw him delve into more experimental territory, using bathtubs as percussion as well as incorporating a church organ into the instrumentation.

UKTV's award winning entertainment channel Dave has commissioned a second series of celebrity car wrapper Yianni Charalambous' UKTV Original show Yianni: Supercar Customiser (20x30'). The first brought in just shy of half a million new viewers to the channel and is one of the most-watched series on streaming service UKTV Play in 2018.

Social media sensation Yianni, who has over a million subscribers to his YouTube channel, will once again lift the garage doors for a fresh series of Yianni: Supercar Customiser showcasing even more of his flash and wild customisations for some of the biggest names in entertainment and sport.
