Sky brings E.T. back to Earth for Christmas - the first time in 37 years

Christmas is always a time for people to reconnect. This year, Sky is continuing a timeless story of friendship by reuniting the beloved character of E.T. with Elliott’s 2019 family. The iconic characters from Universal Pictures’ E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial tell the story of their unbreakable connection using technology from Sky.

E.T. is back on Earth for a surprise visit with Elliott, who now has his own family. Although technology has changed our world since they last saw each other 37 years ago, their friendship remains strong and is a touching reminder of how important reconnecting is at Christmas. This story was made in connection with Universal Pictures, part of the Comcast and Sky family of companies.

• Stephen van Rooyen, CEO UK & Ireland, Sky said:
"It’s an honour to bring E.T. back to Earth in this new festive short story, helping us to celebrate the magic of family time at Christmas and Sky’s part in bringing our customers together at this special time of year. “

• Lance Acord, Director:
“More than anything, the whole story is about family.”

Interview with Glenda Jackson - Elizabeth is Missing - A poignant and compelling mystery based on the bestselling novel by Emma Healey

Two-time Academy Award winner Glenda Jackson makes a triumphant return to the screen after 27 years, in this poignant and compelling mystery based on the bestselling novel by Emma Healey.
When her best friend Elizabeth goes missing, Maud is convinced something terrible has happened. But her search to find Elizabeth unearths an altogether darker unsolved mystery: her sister’s disappearance, long buried in the recesses of her memory.

Can Maud discover the fate of both missing women before her dementia erases the clues and the answers are lost to her forever?

Interview with Glenda Jackson (Maud)

What initially interested you in the project, Elizabeth Is Missing?

Elizabeth Is Missing is about a subject that is of enormous importance. We, the human race, live longer and longer and there are always new illnesses coming to the fore. This story deals with a woman and her family who are going through the realisation of what Alzheimer’s really is and how terrible it is. It was interesting to explore a life lost and how society has tried to maintain those people whose health is also severely damaged.

It’s a great big black hole that’s opening up within western democracy at the moment. The overarching interest for me is this problem of how we deal with the fact that we are living longer. It’s a blessing and it can also be a curse. We don’t know how we are going to care for people who are no longer capable of caring for themselves. It’s going to cost money, so where are we going to get the money from?

How did it feel to be back filming after so long off screen?

It’s been decades since I last stood in front of a camera to make a film and the most remarkable thing for me has been the technological change. In my day, the cameras were enormous and they had to be physically moved around. You’d be ready to shoot but you’d wait for three hours. The camera seems to work off a battery, we had generators in my day. The only way people knew how the work had gone that day was when they’d see the rushes. Now the equipment is just astonishing. People are able to see what’s happening on the set by looking at a screen. I avoided it like the plague but for those people whose business it is to know, it must be invaluable.

Did you undertake any research in that area that has been key to playing the role of Maud?

When I first read the book and then the script, it sparked memories of when I was still a member of parliament and had to visit various day centres and old people’s homes. I wouldn’t say I am an expert in either Alzheimer’s or dementia but I have seen people and families who suffer from it.

I was also privileged to meet a doctor who specialises in dementia and she said the book was very accurate. She remarked, quite profoundly I thought, that it was presented as being so unsentimental. That was very useful to me.

Have there been any challenges in playing Maud?

It’s actually been a challenge to find Maud. The extremes of her experience are easy, but it’s her day-to-day and middle road existence that’s really difficult to pin down. That is of course what makes her so intriguing to play.

What does her friendship with Elizabeth mean to her?

Elizabeth, of the title, is Maud’s best friend. She is probably a decade younger than Maud but they’re both elderly. The Elizabeth story runs concurrently with an incident in Maud’s teenage years when her sister Sukey disappeared. Within the context of the script, Maud is going through the development of Alzheimer’s. She’s sometimes in the here and now, more often in the past and then sometimes very bleakly in the future. What she is, is a person.

Their friendship is another central part and informs the whole film. Now we’re all living longer, undoubtably there will be the terrible pitfall of loneliness. What essentially motivates Maud to continue along a track which she intensely believes in, despite her illness, is her friendship with Elizabeth. It’s not only because of her own sense of being alone but also because she cares for her friend. It’s been proven that loneliness can have a really detrimental effect on mental health. That in itself is something to think about very seriously.

What is Maud’s relationship like with her daughter Helen and her granddaughter Katy?

Maud’s husband died many years ago but she still has family. Her son, who is clearly her favourite child, is in Germany with his family so her closest people are Helen and Katy. Her relationship with Helen veers from being critically ignorant of her to being dependent on her. Maud isn’t ignorant of her being there but she ignores what she thinks and says. At the same time she’s very dependent on her, emotionally and physically. She has these flares of rage but it will be expressed against anybody that’s in the room. In a curious kind of way, it’s not personal. The illness takes away understanding on every kind of human being level. She can be very brutal to her granddaughter but it’s because she doesn’t recognise her as her granddaughter. I’ve seen that, I’ve seen people not recognising their family. However many times they’ve seen it, for the family member it is really desperately upsetting.

A trio of new comedies from BBC Scotland to kick start 2020

The Scotts, Group and the Daly Grind make up a trio of new comedies from BBC Scotland, showcasing new and established comic talent, working in partnership with Screen Scotland to develop and deliver new comedy for Scottish audiences.

Airing on BBC One Scotland in the new year, the three 30-minute comedies are uniquely different with all of them offering development opportunities for both writing and acting talent. They have been made by The Comedy Unit, BBC Studios and Pirate Productions and commissioned by Gavin Smith Commissioning Executive Comedy, Drama and Entertainment for BBC Scotland who will also be the BBC executive producer.

The Scotts
Shadowing a typical Scottish family, this sitcom proves that if blood is thicker than water, no-one is thicker than the Scotts.

Showcasing the antics of the funniest fictional family in Scotland - and written and performed by Robert Florence and Iain Connell - the comedy revolves around siblings Henry (Connell) and Vincent (Florence) who have a love/hate relationship plus their wives Vonny (Shauna Macdonald) and Laura (Sharon Young) and their sister Colette (Louise McCarthy). The Scotts mixes comic scenes with candid pieces-to-camera capturing the petty squabbles, hidden secrets, mini triumphs and major disasters of an everyday Scottish family. The Scotts also stars Barbara Rafferty, Taylor Stewart, Amy Leith and Jamie MacDonald.

The Scotts is a Comedy Unit production.

Group
Everyone needs an audience. As a group of addicts comes together for a weekly session, there is warmth and solidarity, coffee and biscuits, tension and power games. Group is written and created by the critically acclaimed Annie Griffin and Denise Mina. Group stars Lois Chimimba, Bhav Joshi, Lucianne McEvoy, Grant O’Rourke, Sally Reid, Derek Riddell and Jonathan Watson.

Group is a Pirate Production.

Daly Grind
Fresh and fast-paced family comedy, the Daly Grind, centres on devoted mother - and expert multi-tasker - Tracey Daly struggling with the chaos of her daily routine. Set entirely in the Daly household, the comedy unfolds as Tracey wrangles with her three children - Katlyn, Liam and Lucy - alongside her husband Joe. Starring Scarlett Mack, Jordan Young, Rachel Doherty, Cameron Wilke and Bea Tena-Hutchinson, Daly Grind was written and created by brothers, John and Dominic Reynolds.

Daly Grind is a BBC Studios production.

As the stories of DCS Foyle progress through the war, in the final two series we find ourselves in a time of peace at last. But a new kind of war is beginning, one much darker and indistinct than the first; a war that doesn't officially exist: a Cold War. As Foyle is called into service once again, this time on behalf of MI5, he finds himself caught up in a world where integrity is only worth so much, often less than life itself. This boxed set contains:

Doc Martin - Series 1-9

Starting with the arrival of Doctor Martin Ellingham, a respected surgeon from London, in the small fishing village of Portwenn in Cornwall, this fish out of water soon discovers that small village life can present some very big problems. Get on the wrong side of your receptionist and the world can turn against you. Let that same world know your greatest weakness, and it'll soon be used by those who love you and those who feel less inclined. None of these life lessons are easily learned by a man who is best known for his brusque bedside manner and his absolute lack of interpersonal skills. Portwenn itself is brought to life by its rich array of characters including the formidable Sally Tishell who runs the local chemist, Bert Large and his son Al, local policemen Mark Mylow and Joe Penhale, Doc Martin s aunt Dr Ruth Ellingham and, of course, the primary school teacher who fell for the man they thought had no heart, but she found it, Louisa Glasson who would become Louisa Ellingham. Doc Martin has been bringing a certain kind of joy to viewers around the world since 2004 and this collection of the complete Series One to Nine captures the very essence of why this is 'A tragedy stuck inside a comedy as so many fine British comedies have been at heart' The Observer

Inspector Montalbano Complete 1-9
Featuring all 34 of the gripping, compelling and thoroughly enjoyable films based on the bestselling novels of Andrea Camilleri, starring Luca Zingaretti in the title role as the Sicilian detective operating within Italy's precarious justice system. Solving crimes in the Sicilian town of Vigata, he must contend not only with scheming and devious criminals, but also corrupt politicians, police bureaucracy, unreliable judges, lethal mafia families, femmes fatales and more, so much more. Thankfully he can turn to fine Italian cooking and his girlfriend Livia for comfort but even these small pleasures are often interrupted in the life and times of Inspector Montalbano.

First look at Robert Carlyle as the Prime Minister and Victoria Hamilton as his Chief of Staff in Sky Original drama COBRA

As the battle for power continues within Westminster and across the UK, Sky today reveals the first look trailer and images of its new action-packed, political drama, COBRA, written by Ben Richards.

The six-part Sky Original drama will launch on the 17 January on Sky One and NOW TV.

Set in the heart of government during a time of national crisis, the series stars Robert Carlyle as Prime Minister, Robert Sutherland, and Victoria Hamilton as his Chief of Staff, Anna Marshall. The first look images and high-octane trailer shows them fighting for control as they deal with an unfolding national emergency after catastrophic events literally throw the nation into darkness.

Under the name COBRA, a team comprised of Britain’s leading experts, crisis contingency planners and the most senior politicians must now assemble to help bring society back from the brink of collapse.

Joining the Prime Minister and his Chief of Staff are Fraser Walker, played by Richard Dormer, one of the best crisis contingency planners the country has ever known, and Home Secretary, Archie Glover-Morgan, played by David Haig – who will seize any opportunity for more power if such a chance presents itself.

Together they are all forced to contend with impossible political decisions, as well as their ferociously pressured family lives, as the fate and protection of the people of Great Britain is left in their hands.

Writer Ben Richards (Spooks, Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling) said: ‘In a culture which predominantly holds politicians and public servants up for mockery and ridicule, I wanted to make a show that showed them as real, complex human beings dealing with life or death issues. We have been so lucky to have a cast that has been able to bring that aspiration to life."

ITV commissions three part drama, Des - with David Tennant as Dennis Nilsen

ITV has announced the commission of Des, a three part drama which follows the arrest and trial of serial killer Dennis Nilsen, known as Des.

Written by Luke Neal and developed by Luke Neal and Lewis Arnold, the drama is based on material from the book Killing for Company by Brian Masters, which focuses on one of the most infamous cases in UK criminal history, that of serial killer Dennis Nilsen.

Told through the prism of three men – Dennis Nilsen played by David Tennant (Good Omens, Broadchurch), Detective Chief Inspector Peter Jay played by Daniel Mays (Line of Duty, Temple) and biographer Brian Masters played by Jason Watkins (The Crown, The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies) – the series will explore the personal and professional consequences of coming into contact with a man like Nilsen.

Nilsen murdered boys and young men in his flat from 1978 to 1983. He was undetected for five years, and it was only when DCI Peter Jay was called to 23 Cranley Gardens on 9 February, 1983, to investigate human fragments of flesh and bone clogging the drains, that the police realised they had a serial killer on their hands.

Dennis Nilsen was arrested and convicted at the Old Bailey of six counts of murder and two of attempted murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, which was replaced by a whole life tariff in 1994. He died in May 2018.

Told from both the police and Masters’ point of view, Des will explore how a man like Nilsen was able to prey on the young and vulnerable in 1980s Britain.  The series will not only highlight the police investigation and trial but also the effect of the media coverage on public perceptions of the victims at the time, raising questions of just how far have we really come since then?

Additional cast include Ron Cook, Faye McKeever, Chanel Cresswell, Barry Ward, Tony Way, Bronagh Waugh, Laurie Kynaston, Ross Anderson, Ben Bailey Smith, Jay Simpson, Silas Carson, Stuart McQuarrie, Jamie Parker, Lex Shrapnel, Gerard Horan, Joel Morris, Jonathan Coy, Amy Booth-Steel, Ken Bones, Andrew Woodall and Amaka Okafor.

It was announced today that Channel 4 will be the new home of BAFTA and Emmy Award nominated Taskmaster, with a six series deal across three years agreed with Avalon.  New episodes will arrive on Channel 4 from late 2020.

The hugely entertaining irreverent show hosted by Greg Davies as the all-powerful “Taskmaster”, alongside Alex Horne as his loyal assistant, sets out to test the wiles, wit and wisdom of five hyper competitive comedians through a series of strange and surreal challenges.  It started as a live show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe before being developed for television, initially with Channel 4.  It was later commissioned by UKTV for Dave where it has aired for nine very successful series.

Alex Horne, the show’s creator, said: “We’ve had an amazing nine series on Dave and I’d like to thank UKTV for letting us do such ridiculous things for so long. Greg and I are looking forward to getting started on a new series for Channel 4 from next year.  It seems like the right time to move to a channel with a broader audience and I can reassure people who like the show that it won’t be changing one bit and I’ll still be forced to do things no one should ever have to do.”

The Taskmaster, Greg Davies said: “For the first time in our working relationship I agree with little Alex Horne.  The nine series on UKTV have been a joy and I would echo his thanks to all involved.  I do take issue with the notion that the show will remain exactly the same however as I have made it my personal mission to break his spirit.  I will remain even handed with contestants of course, but it really is going to get unpleasant for him.  Peace.”

New episodes of Taskmaster will be broadcast on Channel 4 and repeated on E4 from late 2020.

Sky Studios announces the new Sky Original series DOMINA

The Power Politics Of Ancient Rome

Through The Eyes Of The Women

Milan, November 21 2019 – Sky today announced an ambitious new Sky Original series, DOMINA, which will bring to life the power struggles of Ancient Rome from a different perspective, that of the women.

Produced by Fifty Fathoms (Fortitude) and Sky Studios, with Cattleya as executive production services, the epic ten-part drama is a highly topical story, which follows the life and the extraordinary rise of Livia Drusilla, who overcame adversity to become the most powerful woman in the world. Filming started this week at Cinecittà Studios in Rome.

The series features Kasia Smutniak (Perfect Strangers, Them, Devils) playing Livia Drusilla supported by an international stellar cast including Liam Cunningham (Game of Thrones) playing Livius, Livia’s father, and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet, Death Becomes Her) playing Balbina, an early enemy. Alongside them star Matthew McNulty (Misfits) as the future emperor Gaius, Christine Bottomley (The End of the F***ing World) as Scribonia, Colette Tchantcho (The Witcher) as Antigone, Ben Batt (Captain America: The First Avenger) as Agrippa, Enzo Cilenti (Free Fire) as Tiberius Claudius Nero, while Claire Forlani (Meet Joe Black) plays Claudia Octavia.

The story follows Livia’s journey from a naïve young girl whose world crumbles in the wake of Julius Caesar’s assassination, to Rome’s most powerful and influential Empress, driven by a deep desire to avenge her father and secure power for her sons. Livia and her peers navigate their way through a brutal society by means of strategy, conspiracy, seduction and murder. This is a visceral and authentic family saga, grounded in historical accuracy and bringing to life the incredible true stories of the women who would create one of the most enduring and fascinating dynasties of all time.

Created and written by Simon Burke (Zen, Fortitude), the lead director is the acclaimed Australian filmmaker Claire McCarthy (Ophelia, The Luminaries).

The crew includes top Italian professionals: costumes will be designed by the Academy Award winning Gabriella Pescucci (The Age Of Innocence, Once Upon A Time in America), production design by Luca Tranchino (Prison Break), make up by Katia Sisto (Penny Dreadful) and hair design by Claudia Catini (Trust).

Kasia Smutniak said: “I am thrilled to be playing such a complex character as Livia Drusilla. As a frontrunner in defending women's rights, she was a tough woman who was both feared and cherished and was strong enough to seal the fate of the Roman Empire”.

Claire McCarthy, Domina lead director, said: “This period of Roman history is truth being stranger than fiction. I'm tremendously excited to bring this rich and visceral world to life with this incredible troupe of stellar actors and the gifted creative team. What an honour to be working out of Cinecittà studios too where so many of the greats have built cinema history.”

The series will air exclusively in all Sky territories, in Italy, UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain. NBCUniversal Global Distribution holds international rights in the rest of the world on behalf of Sky Studios.

First look image for original comedy Hitmen starring Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins

Sky has today released the first look image for upcoming six-part comedy starring everyone's favourite double act, Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc in the duo’s first scripted comedy series. Written and created by Joe Parham and Joe Markham, the show is set to premiere on Sky One and NOW TV in spring 2020.

The six-part Sky original series produced by Tiger Aspect follows two best friends trying to make their way in the world with only each other to rely on. They also just happen to kill people for a living.

Morwenna Gordon, Commissioning Editor, Sky Comedy, said: “We are thrilled to have Mel and Sue back on our screens, in their first ever scripted comedy series. We have a brilliant cast, featuring many well-known faces, in a number of unexpected and potentially life-threatening circumstances that Fran and Jamie find themselves in along the way. Joe Parham and Joe Markham have created a world that’s ruthless, funny and heart-warming all at the same time. The series joins a host of fantastic Sky original comedies we have coming to Sky One next year which we can’t wait for our audience to enjoy.”

Joe Parham and Joe Markham said: “We can’t believe that something which has been knocking around inside our heads for so long has been brought to life by two of the funniest people in the country, along with a load of our other comedy heroes.”

Arnold Widdowson, Producer, Tiger Aspect, said: “Hitmen is a real treat for Mel and Sue fans – a surprising version of the two that for all the thrill of the action still retains their hilarious and mischievous dynamic. It’s been an absolute privilege and joy to work with such an iconic double act, and with our brilliant writers Joe Parham and Joe Markham, on a show that allows them to flex new muscles they never knew they had. Mainly in their trigger fingers.”

The Mallorca Files - Crime’s about to get a kick in the Balearics!

Set amongst the vibrant international community of the eponymous Spanish island, The Mallorca Files centres around Detective Miranda Blake (Elen Rhys) - an introvert who is used to living by the rules - and her German counterpart Max Winter (Julian Looman), whose approach to policing is based on gut-instinct, with little interest in process.

Their dynamic - sometimes in sync, but mostly not - sets the rich humour and playful tone of the series, which marks a welcome return to the police caper. The Mallorca Files plays out against the backdrop of sun-drenched locations and glamourous lifestyle of the Balearic island few Brits get to see.

In the line up to bring The Mallorca Files to life are a high-calibre production crew of exceptional pedigree. They include Bryn Higgins (Endeavour, Black Mirror, Electricity) who leads a slate of directors including Charlie Palmer (Poldark, Doctor Who, Silent Witness) Rob Evans (Mr Selfridge, Granchester, Our Girl,) and Gordon Anderson (Shetland, Lovesick, Shameless).

Dominic Barlow (A Discovery Of Witches, Mr Selfridge, George Gently, The Mill, Garrow’s Law) is series producer and Vicki Thomson (Deutschland 86, Granchester, Brief Encounters) is the show’s casting director.

Other key crew include production designer, Michael Fleischer (The Borgias, Hotel Babylon, Fleming); make-up designer Maggi Vaughan (Riviera, Black Mirror, Downton Abbey) and Jan Jonaeus, director of photography (Hooten And The Lady, Safe House, Complicit).

The Mallorca Files is a Cosmopolitan Pictures/Clerkenwell Films co-production for the BBC. Ben Donald and Murray Ferguson are executive producers, together with Dan Sefton who leads a team of writers, which included Rachael New, Sarah-Lou Hawkins, Dan Muirden and Alex McBride.

The show will play out across the week Monday to Friday for two weeks, beginning Monday 25 November on BBC One daytime.

All 10x45' episodes will drop on BBC iPlayer after the first episode airs.

Back To Life is recommissioned by BBC Three and Showtime

Critically acclaimed series Back To Life (6x30’), created by and starring Daisy Haggard (Black Mirror, Uncle) and co-written by Haggard and Perrier award-winner Laura Solon (Office Christmas Party), has been commissioned for a second series by BBC Three and Showtime, in association with All3Media International.

The series is produced by multi-award-winning production company, Two Brothers Pictures (Fleabag, Baptiste, Liar, The Missing) in co-production with BBC Three and Showtime Networks with Daisy Haggard reprising her role as Miri Matteson.

The first series, described as a “darkly comic gem” by The Guardian, debuted on BBC Three in April 2019 and details Miri Matterson’s return to her seaside family home, having spent 18 years in prison for a crime committed during her formative years. Following her first few weeks on the outside, Miri, now a determined yet naïve adult, attempts to put the past behind her in order to have a normal life.

Series two has been commissioned by Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning and Fiona Campbell, Controller for BBC Three, and by Gary Levine and Jana Winograde, Presidents of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc.

Daisy Haggard says: “Laura and I are delighted that Showtime and the BBC are giving us a chance to continue Miri’s story. There’s so much more to tell and we are incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to do that!”

Harry Williams, Writer and Managing Director, Two Brothers Pictures, says: “The reception that Back To Life has received has been amazing. Daisy and Laura are those rare writers that can make you laugh and cry in equal measure - which is a wonderful quality. We can't wait for fans to see what they have in store for Miri this time around.”

Kate Daughton, Head of Comedy, BBC, says: “BBC Three’s job is to champion the next wave of ambitious and talented writers. We’ve struck gold with Daisy and Laura. Back To Life was an instant hit with audiences here and it’s been great to see their distinct UK voices enjoying international success as well.”

Back To Life is created, written and executive produced by Daisy Haggard. The series will be produced by Two Brothers Pictures and executive produced by Harry and Jack Williams and Sarah Hammond. Co-writer Laura Solon will also executive produce. The Commissioning Editor for the BBC is Kate Daughton.

Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry CBE to appear in the twelfth series of Doctor Who

With the TARDIS hurtling full throttle on its way back to BBC One, it is only right that two TV legends will be making their Doctor Who debuts.

TV icons Stephen Fry and Sir Lenny Henry CBE will both appear in the series opener when the TARDIS lands once more, with Jodie Whittaker reprising her role as the Thirteenth Doctor. Armed with a wealth of acting, comedy and writing credentials both are more than equipped to come face to face with the Time Lord and her friends, but will they be friend or foe remains to be seen…

Speaking ahead of his Doctor Who appearance, Stephen Fry says: “Short of being picked for a British space exploration programme and I readily concede that I’m past the age where I’d be considered (if I was ever the right age for such a posting) - then being in an episode of Doctor Who will certainly do as a very sweet second-place excitement.”

Sir Lenny Henry CBE says: “It was absolutely brilliant to be welcomed into the fantastical world of Doctor Who. The nearest I have been to the TARDIS was when I played the Caribbean Doctor in the Lenny Henry Show, so as a life-long (hiding behind the sofa type) Doctor Who fan this is a very special moment for me.”

Chris Chibnall, Showrunner, says: “Doctor Who is coming back with a bang - with two great British icons in major roles. One of the great joys of Doctor Who is getting to work with actors from your wish list. Stephen and Lenny are two of my absolute favourite actors - and to be able to bring them into Doctor Who, in one of our biggest ever stories to kick off the new series, is an absolute thrill.”

Doctor Who will return in early 2020.

Jodie Whittaker will reprise her role as the Thirteenth Doctor alongside Tosin Cole (Ryan) Mandip Gill (Yaz) and Bradley Walsh (Graham) who are all returning for their second series.

Chris Chibnall returns as Showrunner with Matt Strevens as Executive Producer.

BBC One's Sitting In Limbo commences filming

Sitting In Limbo, a Windrush story from Left Bank Pictures for BBC One, has started filming today. The feature-length drama is written by Stephen S. Thompson and is based on a true story.
Patrick Robinson (Casualty, The Bill, Mount Pleasant) and Nadine Marshall (Save Me, National Treasure, The Innocents) will lead the drama as Anthony and Janet Bryan. Stephen S. Thompson has based this - his first screenplay for TV - on the true story of his brother Anthony Bryan and his personal struggle to be accepted as a British Citizen during the Windrush immigration scandal.

Pippa Bennett Warner (MotherFatherSon, Harlots) will play Patrick’s daughter Eileen, CJ Beckford (Small Island, The Trial Of Christine Keeler) will play her brother Gary and Corinne Skinner Carter (EastEnders, Calling the Shots) will play Patrick’s mother, Lucille.

Stella Corradi (Through the Gates, Trigonometry), a Bafta Breakthrough Brit of 2019, will direct with Lila Rawlings (Electric Dreams, Oasis) and Andy Harries (The Crown, Wallander) as executive producers, Pier Wilkie (Don’t Take My Baby, Murdered By My Boyfriend) as producer and Fiona Lamptey (Random Acts, Fright Bites, Screen Daily - Screen Star Of Tomorrow 2019) as co-producer.

Other cast announced today include: Andrew Dennis, Jay Simpson, Jane Wood, Joy Richardson, Elliot Edusah, Simon Lenagan, Tim Preece, Paul Bridle, Michael Workeye, Zachary Hart, Ian Drysdale, Leo Wringer, James Woolley, Clara Oneyemere, Eddie Osei, Sarah Woodward, Steve Edwin, Suzanne Packer, Florisa Kamara and Taija Bryan.

After living in the UK since he was eight years old, Anthony decides to visit his elderly mother in Jamaica. He has never held, or needed, a passport before and while filling out the paperwork at the Passport Office he is stunned to discover that there is no record of him as a British Citizen, despite having lived in the country since 1965. With the onus on him to prove his British citizenship to the Immigration Office, Anthony finds himself stuck in limbo, forced to leave his job and unable to claim benefits. In the early hours of a Sunday morning, Anthony is forcibly removed from his home and detained as an illegal immigrant. The devastation that ensues puts Anthony at the centre of what has now become known as the Windrush scandal.

Sitting in Limbo (1x90’) is a Left Bank Pictures production and was commissioned by Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, and Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content for BBC One. Executive producer for the BBC is Mona Qureshi and for Left Bank Pictures is Lila Rawlings and Andy Harries.

Most Terrifying Ghost Towns in the World

Throughout history, in one way or another, entire villages disappeared or were devastated by natural disasters, radioactive threats, entire populations fled for fear of death.

These places became intriguing and often adventurous sources for many intrepid people who dare to visit them.

Here are some of the creepiest sites around the globe.

Japan: Hashima Island
This site had its peak at the end of the 18th century due to its known underwater coal mines. The island had its population peak in 1960 reaching about 5000 individuals, including miners and their respective families.

Years later, the mines began to dry up, and around 1974 almost the entire population had to emigrate. After this, the prosperity of the island went out.

Now abandoned, Hashima Island is visited by tourists who walk its streets, visit its abandoned houses and shops. A certain air of terror sets the former mining town.

Italy: Craco
This city was founded around the 8th century but was devastated by several natural disasters, including:

1963: Evacuation of the city due to a significant landslide.
1972: A flood conditioned the stay of the locals.
1980: The city was completely abandoned due to a strong earthquake.

The city, currently located on the tip of a hill, miraculously saves the bust of the Virgin Mary, due to which, it still gathers visitors to celebrate religious festivals throughout the year.

Namibia: Kolmanskop
With an out of place aspect, this ghost town had its peak in the early 1900s. The German miners were those who inhabited the town in the middle of the desert to look for the precious diamonds in the area.

The Germans brought their architecture, which gave a singular air to the place in the middle of nowhere.

After World War I, the city began to lose its peak. In 1928 the real decline began due to the discovery of a new area along the coast, rich in diamonds, leaving a gloomy and abandoned city.

In the nearby city of Lüderitz, you can book walks to Kolmanskop, which was gradually being eaten by the vast desert.

Alaska: Kennecott
This city, now of terror, was known for its mills. During the years 1911 and 1938, it produced millions of dollars for copper production, until the day the supply was exhausted. By becoming a city without much to offer, residents began to leave their homes and small businesses, leaving behind a desolate city sad and corroded with terror.

The city was totally like a ghost town in the 50s. Finally, in 1986 it became a National Historic Landmark in charge of the National Park Service, offering tourist tours.

Ukraine: Pripyat
This city is probably the most sadly famous ghost town in the world. It was home to approximately 50,000 people, who were evacuated when part of the Chernobyl Nuclear Station exploded in April 1986.

This disastrous event resulted in the immediate evacuation of the population due to high levels of radiation, leaving practically everything behind.

In recent years, radiation levels dropped considerably, leaving the area marked by scientists as a "safe zone".

Today travelers from all over the world travel through the creepy city. At the same time, it served as inspiration for many horror stories and movies.

As the main attraction, the New Safe Confinement was built with an area equivalent big enough to hold three football stadiums from any of the teams in the NFL betting odds.

Final thoughts
There are many other ghost cities or small creepy towns around the world, desolate and dark, full of sad stories and terror, often of madness.

No doubt the world is full of surprises for people who dare to discover them again or to stay away and forgotten due to their sad outcomes.

Would you visit any of these places?
