Exclusive Chinese series The Victims' Game debuts worldwide today

Today marks the global premiere of Netflix’s exclusive Chinese series The Victims’ Game. The series is produced by Greener Grass Production, a winner of numerous Golden Bell Awards in Taiwan. The story is inspired by The Fourth Victim, a bestselling book written by Taiwanese mystery novelist INFINITY.

Starring accomplished actors like Joseph Chang, Wei-Ning Hsu and Shih-Hsien Wang, and featuring one of the most watched Chinese TV actresses, Ruby Lin, this exciting 8-episode mystery and investigation series is set to blow your mind.

Chief Executive Producer Han-xian Zeng says:
“Apart from eye-catching entertainment elements such as serial murder incidents, suspense reasoning plots, as well as stylised character settings, the essence of the story told in The Victims’ Game lies in humanity and love. The main character is a talented forensic expert and a father unable to express his feelings. By hunting down the perpetrators in a series of cases, he tries to rescue those in society who have given up on themselves. However, he also has a hidden agenda unknown to others.

What will happen next? With a level of emotional arousal rarely achieved in the crime investigation genre, this series hopes to resonate with audiences from Taiwan and the rest of the world and take them on a 9-hour mind-striking journey.

Chief producer Sheng-jung Tang adds that:
“The Victims’ Game not only preserves its original Taiwanese features, but also embraces a global perspective. This crime based series set in the local investigation environment of Taiwan, providing a brand-new vision to audiences throughout the world in a narrative way like no other. It is definitely a production that deserves worldwide attention. We hope that global audiences would come to know these talented cast and crew through this series!”

Netflix’s exclusive Chinese Series The Victims’ Game will be premiering globally on 30 April.

Tom Allen to explore 65 years of TV adverts

Comedian Tom Allen is to delve into the advertising archives in a new series produced by Boundless for Channel 4.

Tom Allen: Ad Man (w/t) celebrates 65 years of the nation’s best-loved and most outrageous TV adverts, charting the changing values and attitudes of the UK along the way.

During a romp through six decades of the TV ads that made us gasp, laugh, cry and buy, Tom reveals what some of Britain’s most iconic ad campaigns really say about us. Over four episodes, he’ll take a smart look at the infamous and the long-forgotten, unearthing ads that could be baulked at or banned today, as well as revisiting the nostalgic, the heart-warming and the uplifting.

Tom will make viewers think as well as laugh, as he delves into the issues of gender, race, class and Britishness, and explores how our evolving attitudes to these issues have been reflected in the ads beamed into the nation’s living rooms.

Filmed from the comfort of Tom’s own home, Tom Allen: Ad Man (w/t) will feature playful spoofs and lots of laughs, alongside thought-provoking observations. It will be filmed with a self-shooting kit while Tom is self-isolating in the home he shares with his parents.

Tom Allen said: “I’m delighted to be analysing the world of advertising which, in our consumer age, has really dictated how we see ourselves. I don’t even know who I am unless I’m buying something! If I buy Ski Yoghurt - does that make me a health freak? If I choose Diet Coke - does that mean I should take my top off? Would drinking Cinzano make me Joan Collins??! Anyway, fingers crossed it’s just as glamourous as the programme Mad Men, but here’s hoping I don’t start smoking, drinking Scotch during the day and having an affair with my secretary.”

BBC re-makes Alan Bennett’s masterpieces - Talking Heads

Starring Jodie Comer, Monica Dolan, Martin Freeman, Tamsin Greig, Sarah Lancashire, Lesley Manville, Lucian Msamati, Maxine Peake, Rochenda Sandall, Kristin Scott Thomas, Imelda Staunton and Harriet Walter (L-R, above).

Filming begins today on new productions of Alan Bennett’s critically acclaimed and multi-award-winning Talking Heads monologues, which first aired on BBC Television in 1988 and 1998. Ten of the original pieces will be remade, with the addition of two new ones written by Bennett last year. They are produced by Nicholas Hytner’s London Theatre Company and Kevin Loader and will air in the coming months on BBC One.

As the British public service broadcaster, the BBC has a key role to play in continuing to offer new programming for our audience at this time of national crisis. The contained nature of Bennett's monologues allowed the opportunity to tell timely and relevant stories while following the latest government guidelines on safe working practices during Covid-19.

Alan Bennett says: "In such difficult circumstances, that the BBC should choose to remount both series of Talking Heads, and produce two entirely new ones, is a comfort and a huge compliment. I hope a new generation of actors will get and give as much pleasure as we did 20 and 30 years ago."

Nicholas Hytner, Bennett's long-term collaborator and Lead Director and Producer, says: "Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads are among the masterworks of one of the very greatest writers in TV, film and theatre history.

"It has been a profound and fascinating experience to work out a way of making them again, this time with a company of phenomenal actors who are the equal of those who first made them; with a group of leading theatre directors, colleagues and friends of long standing; and with a team behind the camera that represents the best of the British TV and film industries.

"It is a wonderful bonus that two of the 2020 Talking Heads are totally new, written only a short time before the current crisis began. Everyone involved has been working in an unprecedented way, rigorously observing social distancing, entirely rethinking ways of filmmaking that until a few weeks ago seemed routine. The shoot will never bring any of us within touching distance of each other, but I hope that in every other way it will reach out and touch millions of viewers. We are all of us beyond grateful to the BBC for setting us this challenge."

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: "Covid-19 has laid waste to drama production in the UK, but it has also posed a challenge: how do we adhere to restrictions while still offering British viewers the chance to lose themselves in great stories at this time of national need?

"Full of insight, wit, daring and compassion, these are stories of individual lives - but of great resonance. I am so grateful to Alan, Nicholas Hytner, Kevin Loader and the whole team for the caution, ingenuity and wisdom which they have shown in bringing these stories to the screen."

The Talking Heads monologues were first broadcast on the BBC in 1988 and 1998, breaking new ground for television, and widely celebrated as Alan Bennett’s masterpieces. They had a stellar cast including Patricia Routledge, Maggie Smith, Stephanie Cole, Julie Walters, Thora Hird, Eileen Atkins, David Haig and Penelope Wilton, alongside Bennett himself. The monologues won two Baftas, an RTS award and have also since been included on the A-level and GCSE English Literature syllabus.

The monologues which will air on BBC One in the coming months are as follows, in alphabetical order:

Jodie Comer in Her Big Chance (1988), directed by Josie Rourke
Monica Dolan in The Shrine (2019), directed by Nicholas Hytner
Martin Freeman in A Chip In The Sugar (1988), directed by Jeremy Herrin
Tamsin Greig in Nights In The Garden of Spain (1998), directed by Marianne Elliott
Sarah Lancashire in An Ordinary Woman (2019), directed by Nicholas Hytner
Lesley Manville in Bed Among The Lentils (1988), directed by Nicholas Hytner
Lucian Msamati in Playing Sandwiches (1998), directed by Jeremy Herrin
Maxine Peake in Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet (1988), directed by Sarah Frankcom
Rochenda Sandall in The Outside Dog (1998), directed by Nadia Fall
Kristin Scott Thomas in The Hand Of God (1998), directed by Jonathan Kent
Imelda Staunton in A Lady Of Letters (1988), directed by Jonathan Kent
Harriet Walter in Soldiering On (1988), directed by Marianne Elliott

Channel 4 announces 100 Ways to Make a Baby

Channel 4 has commissioned a 1x60 film which follows the journey of Jake and Hannah Graf as they become Britain’s most prominent transgender parents. Jake and Hannah announced the birth of their baby, Millie, on April 16th 2020, but their path to parenthood has had some unique challenges along the way.

Made by Parable and filmed over a year by director Gussy Sakula-Barry, the documentary follows the pair as they strive to turn their dream of starting a family into a reality, using Jake's embryos that he had frozen. As they embark on their unique experience, the couple face up to various ideas of what it means to be a parent in modern Britain and explore the options for surrogacy open to British people in the UK and abroad. With their Belfast-based surrogate's due date rapidly approaching and the country in lockdown, they have to race to Northern Ireland to make it in time for the birth.

Jake and Hannah married in 2018. Jake is a writer, filmmaker and actor known for his roles in The Danish Girl and Colette. Hannah was one the highest-ranking transgender officers in the British Army and has an MBE for her work with LGBT army personnel.

Jake and Hannah Graf said: “When we began the nail biting journey to parenthood, we could never have imagined the rollercoaster ride that would follow and the additional pressures and challenges that came with having our baby during a global pandemic. From finding our surrogate through lockdowns, C sections and struggling to register our baby, there has never been a dull moment, and this film will one day be the most incredible memento for the star of the show, our beautiful daughter Millie.”

BBC announces plans for a Springwatch like no other series

Springwatch will return to BBC Two this May, with a special series of live programmes which aim to keep the UK connected to native wildlife offering real comfort viewing, at a time of heightened uncertainty for the country.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis the BBC has found an innovative new way to ensure the series will continue to broadcast live for three weeks on BBC Two. With the presenters no longer able to gather together in the Springwatch hub, they will be staying on home-turf and broadcasting live from their local areas, across the country.

This special series of Springwatch, will document a spring like no other, as the native wildlife of the UK adjusts to life in both towns and in the country without the presence of people. The stories of this spring will be presented by Chris Packham, live from his New Forest patch, Gillian Burke live from a Cornish base and Iolo Williams, from his home in mid-Wales.

This year Michaela Strachan, who is locked down in South Africa, will be unable to join the team in person. However, she will send a message of support to the viewers and the series will revisit some of her favourite Springwatch highlights from past years.

Across the three-week run, the team will be joined by special guests presenters.

The series will celebrate both the wildlife and the science stories that showcase the diversity of UK habitats and species and will feature a number of pre-recorded wildlife films, captured just prior to the Government restrictions on movement, as well as more recent content shot in accordance with the official guidance on self-distancing.

Chris Packham says: “This Springwatch will be a series like no other. As the country experiences lockdown the natural world offers solace to so many. I’m delighted that through the magic of modern technology, the Springwatch team will be able to share the splendour of spring with the nation again this year. And broadcasting live from the New Forest, I’m looking forward to showing viewers some of the best British wildlife from my neck of the woods.”

Gillian Burke says: “This is certainly a unique spring and one that has presented the whole nation with some really tough challenges. With so many of us stuck indoors, Springwatch will bring the bright energy and colour of a season that is the very symbol of hope and resilience itself. I can’t wait to share this spring with everyone!”

Iolo Williams says: I’m delighted that Springwatch is going ahead next month. With everyone in lockdown, the natural world has provided a soothing escape for so many people. It will be a pleasure to re-join the ‘Watches team and bring the best of British wildlife into the nation’s living rooms.”

BBC Three commissions How’s Your Head, Hun? with Michelle Visage

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Big ones, in large glasses. So make Tuesdays your cocktail day, mix yourself a large Quarantini, don your comfiest pyjama bottoms and sashay over to BBC Three where Michelle Visage and family are at home in LA, determined to lift your spirits during lockdown. You are all cordially invited to her weekly house party!

With her Drag Race life temporarily on hold, Michelle’s high energy has been refocused on her family and keeping things light in worrying times. They too are trying to find some kind of rhythm as they settle in for the long haul of lockdown. Michelle is with her husband, David, her teenage daughter, Lola, Lola’s newish boyfriend and a menagerie of pets. Michelle’s older daughter Lily, is away at college, and so she’s ensuring daily motherly contact with not just her, but a large bunch of her nearest and dearest.

She may be physically distanced, but Michelle is doing her utmost to look after her family, keep herself busy, and stay in touch with her friends across both sides of the Atlantic. It’s her way of coping, and she’s inviting you along for the ride too as she asks: “How’s your head, hun?”

Michelle has enlisted her family as both camera operatives and co-hosts. Cameras have been rigged around her house (safely, of course) and there is a non-existent fourth wall. Each week you can join her for a family progress report, and high jinks. Michelle will also be attempting new 'lockdown projects' each week, because much like the rest us, she has taken up new projects with gusto and mixed results.

For Michelle some of it is new territory, such as the kitchen. She’s baked banana bread, is learning Italian; planting pomegranate trees, reorganising her extensive wardrobes, de-cluttering the house, investing in very glamorous loungewear, researching new ways to maintain her diva looks and training her newly adopted dog. She’s staying in with style!

Just like you, Michelle’s had her bad days and good days in lockdown, but we’re all in this together. Let’s stay in and stay sane together. Anybody fancy a vogue?

Michelle says: “I am SO excited to give everyone's anxiety and worry a rest with How's Your Head, Hun? When you see how quarantine life is with MY family and friends, we will all be laughing together! Get ready!”

The series is expected to air in May 2020 on BBC Three.
Will have eight episdoes in total, with each installement being 30 minutes long in length.
Michelle's new series will be available to watch via the BBC iPlayer.

Captain Tom's War

Captain Tom's War

Fri 08 May 2020 - 8.00pm - 8.30pm

Captain Tom Moore, Britain’s new national treasure, will tell the story of his part in World War Two for this new ITV documentary to be shown on VE Day.

The former British Army Officer who raised more than £28million for the NHS by walking 100 lengths of his garden with his frame, actually fought in Burma and shares his memories of the conflict to draw attention to the “forgotten war” on the occasion.

Airing just a week after his own centenary celebrations, in this new programme Tom looks back on his time during the War in the brutal Burma campaign, as a million Allied troops from 40 nations attempted to repel the invading forces of Imperial Japan from the British colony over almost three years, between 1941 and 1944.

Captain Tom honours the soldiers who fought in what has since become known, with so much focus on the European battlefront and on VE Day, as 'The Forgotten War’, which finally came to an end in August 1945.

The fact the Burma campaign, fought in what is now known as Myanmar, remains relatively unknown is a real bugbear for the Yorkshireman, which is why he committed to redressing the balance by making the programme.

Captain Tom’s War will also feature Tom’s daughters, Lucy and Hannah, who reveal family photos from their trip back to Burma.

Captain Tom entered officer training in 1940 at the age of 20, going on to serve in India before reaching Burma. There he was involved in the massive amphibious assault on Arakan, the instrumental part of recapturing the colony, before pushing on with his troops to the capital, Rangoon.

Featuring Captain Tom's recollections interwoven with archive footage, this programme aims to provide a stirring and vivid insight into both the conditions for those who went into battle, and the man himself.

This is a North One production for ITV

A year later, they’re both studying in Dublin and Marianne has found her feet in a new social world but Connell hangs at the side lines, shy and uncertain.

Honest, smart and intoxicating, Normal People sees the pair weave in and out of each other’s lives and explores just how complicated intimacy and young love can be.

Directed by Oscar nominated Lenny Abrahamson (Room, The Little Stranger, Frank) and award-winning Hettie Macdonald (Howard’s End), with Catherine Magee (Resistance, Rebellion) serving as series producer, filming for Normal People took place in Dublin, Sligo, Italy and Sweden.

Tom Hardy returns to CBeebies Bedtime Stories - snuggle down for six brand new stories with the award-winning actor

CBeebies’ most popular Bedtime Stories reader, Tom Hardy, is returning to screens with a selection of brand new stories to settle the nation’s children down before they make their weary way to bed.

The actor first appeared on CBeebies back in 2016 and since then his Bedtime Stories have been requested an incredible one million times on BBC iPlayer.

Tom wanted to play a part in keeping the children of the UK entertained at this challenging time and will read a new story each day starting on Monday 27 April to Friday 1 May, with the date of his sixth, and final, story yet to be confirmed.

Tom, who was accompanied by his adorable French bulldog, Blue, for some of the stories will read his first, Hug Me, by Simone Ciraolo on Monday 27 April at 6.50pm on CBeebies. It is about Felipe the young cactus who really needs a hug but his family just isn't the touchy-feely kind so he sets off to find a friend of his own - and a hug.

Tom opens the story by saying: “Hello. I’m Tom. Sometimes, on a day like this, I feel strong and happy. But on other days, I just need somebody to give me a hug. Tonight’s bedtime story is all about a little cactus called Felipe, who just wants a hug too.”

He concludes the story by reassuring viewers: “So, in the end Felipe found someone to hug. It’s not always possible to hug the ones that you love. But they’re always there, in your heart.”

Other stories include: Under The Same Sky by Robert Vescio and Nicky Johnston on Tuesday 28 April, about two children on opposite sides of the world who crave friendship. Is it possible to be friends across the miles?; There’s A Tiger In The Garden by Lizzy Stewart is on Wednesday 29 April and is about the power of imagination being able to take you anywhere, even for Nora who doesn’t believe her Grandma when she says she’s seen a tiger in the garden; and Don’t Worry, Little Crab by Chris Haughton is about mustering the courage to try something new and how saying: "Don’t worry, I’m here" can help tentative little crabs discover the brilliant worlds that await when they take the plunge.

Concluding ‘Tom Week’ on Friday 1 May, is The Problem With Problems by Rachel Rooney and Zehra Hicks. Tom tells the bold, humorous and insightful story about how to deal with problems.

Cheryl Taylor, Head of Content, BBC Children’s, says: “It goes without saying how thrilled we are to have Tom reading more stories for us. It’s during challenging times like this that the BBC serves its purpose to entertain the whole of the UK and these new stories are guaranteed to do just that with their themes of long distance friendship, sharing problems and true courage in overcoming seemingly impossible challenges.”

The filming of Tom’s new stories was carried out in his garden and in line with the social distancing guidelines.

CBeebies Bedtime Stories in on each weekday at 6.50pm on the CBeebies channel and is also available on BBC iPlayer.

Gemma Collins is a Diva on Lockdown

ITV today announced the return of Diva Forever to ITVBe, with new title Diva on Lockdown.

The brand new series, made by Lime Pictures, will follow the nation's favourite diva and Queen of memes, Gemma Collins, as she deals with the Coronavirus lockdown and finds new ways of sharing her lifestyle with the nation.

Viewers will see how the icon of Essex has adapted to the UK being in lockdown. As working from home becomes the norm and with schools, restaurants and shops closed across the country, the GC says farewell to her film crew and instead, fixed-rig cameras will capture the nation’s favourite diva at home.

Before the lockdown, successful business woman Gemma Collins was searching for her new dream home and not only rubbing shoulders with famous faces, she was also mixing in Royal circles.

With Gemma closing the doors to her Brentwood shop, will the lockdown put her dream home and future in jeopardy?

Gemma Collins said:
“We were in the middle of filming my new series of Diva with loads of exciting stuff planned. But as you know, we’ve found ourselves in the middle of a pandemic. So here we are now…I’m standing in my living room, with fixed rig cameras all over my house to bring you Diva on Lockdown. You want the GC, so the GC found a new way of working. You’re going to see everything that I do in isolation. We’ll all be on our journey together.”

Gemma continued:
“I’m being filmed and I’ve also got the producers speaking in my ear so if it sounds as if I’m talking to myself…well maybe sometimes I am. I can guarantee though, what you see will definitely be 100% authentic GC. I hope it cheers you up in these difficult times.”

Tributes to Tim Brooke-Taylor

Statement from Tim Brooke-Taylor’s agent: “It is with great sadness that we announce Tim’s death early today from COVID-19. Joining Footlights in 1960 took him to providing a huge variety of splendid entertainment - television, radio, theatre, film, books, DVDs, CDs, quizzes, etc. - all of which he undertook with energy and a great sense of fun. We will remember him for so much but must just mention The Goodies and I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue. He had, of course, many fans whom he always treated cheerfully even after long and exhausting rehearsals and recordings. He was an exceptional client and a pleasure to represent. We’re grateful that we have so much of his work to view, read and listen to. In all the time with us and in all his showbiz work, he has been supported by Christine, his wife.”

Sioned Wiliam, Radio 4’s Commissioning Editor for Comedy, added: “Tim Brooke-Taylor had a long and distinguished career in comedy. He was charming, quick witted and a hugely skilful comic. He was much loved both by our listeners and by his colleagues, and he will be sorely missed by all at Radio 4.”

Graeme Garden said: “I am terribly saddened by the loss of a dear colleague and close friend of over 50 years. Tim and I met at Cambridge University in the early 1960s and have enjoyed working together almost constantly from that time onwards, on radio, stage, and TV. He was a funny, sociable, generous man who was a delight to work with. Audiences found him not only hilarious but also adorable. His loss at this dreadful time is particularly hard to bear, and my thoughts are with Christine, Ben, Edward and their families.”

Jack Dee said: “It has come as devastating news to hear that Tim has succumbed to this dreadful virus - especially when we all thought he was recovering. Tim was a delightful man and never anything but great company. It has always been one of the great joys of my career to work with someone who was part of the comedy landscape of my childhood. I can’t bear the thought of introducing I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue without being able to say: 'And on my right, Tim Brooke-Taylor…' Tim brought a unique quality to Clue. He was a proper team player, very generous as a performer, never egotistical and always more than delighted to set himself up as the butt of the joke. For me, his great comedy gift was playing the injured innocent and he did it with brilliance and a characteristic lightness of touch. It’s always heartbreaking to lose a loved one, but these times have created the cruelest of circumstances for that to happen in and my thoughts are with his wife Christine and all his family.”

First Look: The Real Housewives of Cheshire Series 11

Series 11 of the hit series launches on ITVBe this spring.

The Real Housewives of Cheshire are back for series 11 of the hit ITVBe show with even more fun, frolics and fabulousness. Launching this spring, the 7x60’ series will be followed by the Reunion show.

Dawn Ward, Ester Dohnalová, Hanna Kinsella, Rachel Lugo, Seema Malhotra and Tanya Bardsley will all return to our screens for series 11. They will be joined by beloved housewife Lauren Simon, who is also set to come back and Christine McGuiness who returns as a guest. But how will the ladies fare when another housewife is brought into the fold?

New addition, Nicole Sealey is famous in Cheshire for her no-nonsense attitude. Business woman, mother and self-proclaimed ‘ball-buster’, Nicole isn’t your typical Cheshire Housewife. Originally from London, she is a recent addition to the affluent golden triangle, after she moved to Wilmslow five years ago with her husband, Joe, son of Manchester United legend Les Sealey. Together with her husband, Nicole owns a personal training company, NEON PT and gym. She also runs her own railway recruitment company. In addition to these businesses, the couple have recently put in a bid to takeover Macclesfield Town Football club. If they are successful, Nicole will become the third woman in the UK to own a football club.

Nicole Sealey commented:
“Since moving to Cheshire five years ago with my family, I’ve come across many of The Real Housewives, but joining the show is a brilliant opportunity to get to know all of them better. I’m proud to join such an amazing and powerful group of women. I can’t wait to get started!”

The new series picks up with life as busy as ever at Warford Hall. As Dawn and the Ward family start to plan for Darby’s wedding, it’s time for Ester to move out as she starts to question her place in Cheshire and where her future lies. Newlywed Hanna starts to consider how becoming a mother might impact on her perfect life with Martin, whilst Rachel starts to explore the dating scene. Seema and Tanya also look to expand their businesses – but will Tanya’s new crystal venture stimulate the excitement she hopes for? And how will Lauren settle back in?

Lauren Simon commented:
“Having been a cast member since the very beginning, I’m honoured to be making my return to the show. The cast and crew are like a family to me and after a particularly difficult year, I’m over the moon to be able to come back and have some fun with my girlies!”

Inspector Gereon Rath (Volker Bruch) and Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) are assigned to investigate the violent death of a silent film actress. In the meantime, political extremists regather their forces and democracy itself is under more threat than ever. As the rise of national socialism confronts growing communist factions, time is ticking inexorably towards the inevitability of war once more…
