Set on the magical Italian Riviera, Hotel Portofino follows the exploits of a very British family and their guests over the summer of 1926. Starring Natascha McElhone as Bella Ainsworth, the owner and moving spirit behind the hotel, her caddish husband Cecil played by Mark Umbers and Anna Chancellor as the imperious and hard-to-please Lady Latchmere. Political corruption, sexual intrigue and the theft of an ‘old master’ painting combine to form a gripping story of personal awakening under the liberating influence of Italy’s enchanting culture, climate and cuisine.
Rose and her mother, Julia, arrive at the hotel to evaluate a prospective marriage with Lucian, the war veteran son of the Hotel’s proprietors. But his mother, Bella, has more immediate worries: her most critical guest, Lady Latchmere, has fallen ill; the new help Constance March has yet to arrive; her aristocratic husband, Cecil, is behaving badly; and she unexpectedly finds herself vulnerable to blackmail threats from a local Fascist politician, Signor Danioni.
