BBC and SHOWTIME have unveiled a captivating glimpse into the upcoming gothic thriller "The Woman in the Wall," a 6-episode series with each episode spanning 60 minutes. Leading the cast is Ruth Wilson, a distinguished BAFTA awardee known for her roles in "Mrs Wilson," "The Affair," and "Luther." Sharing the spotlight is BAFTA nominee Daryl McCormack, recognized for his performances in "Good Luck to You Leo Grande," "Peaky Blinders," and "Bad Sisters." The creative force behind the series is Joe Murtagh, acclaimed for his work on "Calm with Horses." This fictional drama, thoughtfully crafted, delves into the legacy of one of Ireland's most unsettling chapters – the harrowing establishments referred to as The Magdalene Laundries.
"The Woman in the Wall" presents a mystery that is both distinctive and stirring, marked by its psychological depth and emotional resonance. Infused with dark humour, this enthralling detective narrative is set to grace BBC One and iPlayer in the UK. The series was brought to life on Northern Ireland's locations with the support of funding from Northern Ireland Screen. Subsequently, it will be broadcast on Paramount+ alongside SHOWTIME in the US, and exclusively on Paramount+ across Canada, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and South Korea. Paramount Global Content Distribution will oversee the series' distribution in additional international markets.
Produced by the esteemed British independent production company Motive Picture, with the support of Fifth Season, the narrative revolves around Lorna Brady (portrayed by Wilson), a woman hailing from the fictitious Irish village of Kilkinure. Her life takes a chilling turn when she awakens one morning to discover a lifeless body within her residence. The eerie twist lies in Lorna's lack of knowledge regarding the identity of the deceased woman or the possibility that she might be linked to the apparent homicide. Lorna's life has been plagued by intense episodes of sleepwalking ever since she was forcibly separated from her existence at the tender age of 15 and confined within a convent. It was there that she gave birth to her daughter Agnes, who was callously taken from her, leaving Lorna in the dark about Agnes's fate.
Adding to Lorna's challenges, Detective Colman Akande (played by McCormack) is hot on her trail, investigating a seemingly unrelated crime to the corpse discovered in her home. Colman, a driven officer within the Garda Síochána, has swiftly ascended the ranks due to his innate skills. Behind his acerbic humour lies a subdued melancholy, and his encounter with Lorna Brady compels him to confront his own haunting secrets.
As Colman's pursuit of a murderer and Lorna's quest for her lost daughter unfold, their paths unexpectedly intersect in profound ways. Lorna's journey to find Agnes delves deep into her own past and uncovers the darkest enigmas of Kilkinure. As the two navigate their quests, they find themselves entangled in a complex web of answers they both yearn for.
