Wild Scandinavia - Interview with narrator Rebecca Ferguson

Q. What made you want to be part of this series?

I was brought up having a magical connection to nature.  When later introduced to the world of BBC wildlife programmes it brought back so much nostalgia.  Being asked to be part of this series therefore was a huge honour for me.

Q. Tell us a bit about growing up in Scandinavia.

When I was growing up, I always wanted to go exploring in the woods and become one of my favourite childhoods characters Ronja from stories by Astrid Lindgren. She was a true representation of Swedish and Scandinavian nature. I also loved to do another tradition of picking wild strawberries and threading them through strains of straw.

Q. Tell us about your personal passion for Scandinavia

It's Raw and wild. It's Pinecones, mushroom picking, cold, mythical mysterious.  So many tales and stories come from the world of Scandinavia.

Q. Describe any personal experiences you've had with wildlife in Scandinavia

It's hard not to have connections with nature.  For me it's about feeling connected to it and being a part of it daily.  I was brought up in Stockholm then moved to the south of Sweden to a remote fishing village, meaning I got to explore such drastic difference in environments and temperatures.

Q. Were there any standout or memorable sequences in the series for you?

Being a part of the whole story and seeing things that I would have never got the opportunity to see was such a treat. It brings me as close to it as possible.  It's so unusual to see it all first-hand and I got to be part of it adding my narrative which was magical. As an ocean lover, I particularly enjoyed the reproductive process of the synchronised star fish and watching the sea cucumbers feed on the algae and plankton from the seabeds.

Q. Did you learn anything new about Scandinavia that you didn't know before narrating the series?

Yes! I couldn't believe that they are still preserving fish the same way we did in the Viking times! It was fascinating to see that process.

Q. What do you believe is so captivating about this region?

The Landscape is the main characteristic, it's sharp and harsh and the animals have had to learn to shape to their environment.  The extreme difference between the North of Sweden with its angular landscapes to the south of Sweden with its rolling hillsides, orchards and apple trees.

Q. Do you have a favourite species from the series and why?

Yes! The White-Tailed Sea Eagle is my favourite species from the series. They are so majestic flying through the air.  Their hunting skills of catching the fish is like watching a thrilling chase scene from a movie! It's so highly skilled and chaotic at the same time.

Q. What do you hope viewers will take away from watching Wild Scandinavia?

I hope that they it will Learn about new environments and that it opens up their eyes to the beauty of this region.  How different it is. Why it's so different. How the people have had to adapt to the environment.  The extremes of the seasonal weather and landscapes.  I hope it makes people want to visit and to nurture and to care for our world even more.

Joe Lycett Makes A Splash

Lycett Investigates Water Companies Amidst UK Sewage Crisis

Amidst a significant sewage crisis in the UK, Joe Lycett is on a mission to uncover the truth behind rogue water companies responsible for pumping sewage into waterways and seas.

Renowned for his confrontations with the oil industry in "Joe Lycett vs the Oil Giant" and his Bafta-winning special "Joe Lycett vs David Beckham," the comedian is now turning his attention to the pollution of waterways and the questionable practices of water companies. In this new investigative special for Channel 4, Joe delves into the reasons behind the alarming contamination of one of the country's most precious resources.

In 2022, water companies in England alone recorded 301,091 sewage overflows, accumulating a staggering total of 1,754,921 hours. This equates to a continuous discharge lasting over 200 years. Shockingly, only 14% of English rivers currently meet the "good" ecological status, with sewage pollution identified as a significant contributing factor. Meanwhile, privatized water and sewerage companies in England disbursed £1.4 billion in dividends in 2022, as revealed by a comprehensive analysis.

As part of the investigative program, Joe recently executed a bold stunt to launch his fictional podcast project, "Turdcast." The attention-grabbing event featured a colossal inflatable toilet, the Turdis, which inadvertently released simulated "sewage" into Liverpool Docks. Importantly, the stunt had no environmental or biological impact on the area, as the spillage consisted of marine mud rather than actual sewage.

Joe Lycett said: "I spilled fake sewage because I wanted to get people talking about the billions of litres of real sewage that are released every year by our water companies. Last year, according to one analysis the water companies paid shareholders £1.4 billion in dividends. That's a lot of money that could have been used to improve the sewer network and reduce spills.

"We're asking the water companies to stop paying dividends and instead invest the money in solving this problem. So please write to your water company asking them to sign up to what I'm calling Joe's Poo Promise – not the first time I've used those words – there's information about how to do this at turdcast.co.uk."

Joe Lycett vs Poo (w/t) is a 1 x 60 for Channel 4 due to air in 2024.

Interview with Bernie Clifton

Ahead of the publication of his eagerly-awaited autobiography, comic legend Bernie Clifton reflects on the influence of Les Dawson, reducing the late Queen to tears, gatecrashing ‘The Voice’ and retiring Oswald The Ostrich.

When did you start writing the book and what inspired you to do so?

I started writing probably 15 years ago. I felt I had to. it’s just that my story has had so many twists and turns it needed a definitive commentary that only I could deliver.

You’ve had a very varied career, spanning so many different genres. What would you say is your favourite discipline?

My favourite discipline has to be performing in Variety Theatre. As a teenager I loved watching the Variety Shows at the Theatre Royal in St. Helens, (which was at the bottom of our Street). Barry Cryer once said I’d spun off the ‘Time Warp’ a generation too late, he meant that in essence I was a ‘Variety’ performer, but by the time I’d got my act together, in my early 20’s, the Variety Theatre circuit had disappeared to be replaced by the Social Clubs, so I became a Club Act.

How did you get started in showbiz?

I got started in Showbiz as a singer with the Band at the Co-op Ballroom. During the day I was an apprentice Plumber for the local Council and working in Bathrooms (great acoustics) helped to enhance my vocals. The resident Band Singer was called up to do his National Service, I saw my chance and asked for an audition. I’ll never forget the first time I stood up to sing. It was a Foxtrot and the song was ‘Love is a Many Splendoured Thing’.

I was living the dream, on Saturday afternoons I was playing left wing for the ‘Saints’ Junior Rugby B Team and a few hours later I’d be singing my heart out in front of hundreds of my fellow teenagers.

What inspired you to create Oswald The Ostrich?

The Ostrich…I’d graduated from being ‘just a singer’ to a Comedy/Vocal’ Act using a few small props. Following advice from Les Dawson in 1972, (he told me “Do your own thing, if you like working with props become a prop Comic”), I became a visual  comic. Within a couple of years I was travelling a huge rubber shark, a 20 foot high inflatable Diving Suit, a Cat that sat on my shoulder, a full size Lionskin and a pair of Biscuit Tins to dance in. Someone told me they’d seen a guy ‘on a Chicken’ in a street carnival, I told legendary Prop maker Peter Pullan about it and he made me one.

Just another Prop I thought but it grew and grew. A few years (and many modifications later) we stopped the Show at the Royal Variety Show in front of Her late Majesty the Queen who was reported ‘to be dabbing away tears of laughter’. After 25 years I’d become an overnight success.

What made you go on THE VOICE?

I’d started taking singing lessons to rediscover my singing voice. There’d been a vast improvement and I thought ‘THE VOICE’ would be a perfect showcase, I didn’t tell anyone what I was up to in case they tried to talk me out of it.  Although the ‘Chairs’ didn’t turn, it reminded the world that I was much more than an elderly Ostrich Jockey.

What do you want people to take from the book?

I hope it reflects my journey, that little lad wearing clogs who went on to meet the Queen eventually earning a standing ovation in Las Vegas. Along the way I travelled the world with a brass Band carrying a Trombone I couldn’t play, and, oh yes, almost forgot, as a hobby I learned to fly a Microlight.

What is the secret to a long life?

Being lucky perhaps. Looking back I’ve experienced some tragedies which have left their mark but even so to have reached 87 makes me a lucky Boy.

Who would you most like to work with?

I’d love to work with the next generation, Jon Richardson had me on ’Meet the Richardsons’ a couple of times. Johnny Vegas of course

Have you still got any ambitions left?

I’m hoping to tour again,  this time with my Book under me arm. And yes it’s true, the Ostrich has been put out to pasture (seemed the kindest thing to do)

Finally, what other projects are you working on?

I’d love to continue performing with the ‘Legends of Variety’ Tour and I’m happy to report that my voice continues to recover following my collision with Covid last year.

TED – The TV prequel to hit film franchise TED –coming to Sky Max early next year

After the tremendous success of the globally acclaimed film franchise "Ted," Sky is set to bring the beloved bear to the small screen in a 7-episode prequel series. Exclusively available in the UK and Ireland on Sky Max, the series is scheduled to debut early next year.

Set in 1993, the series follows Ted the bear, voiced by Seth MacFarlane, as he navigates life after his moment of fame has passed. Returning to his roots in Framingham, Massachusetts, Ted resides with his best friend, 16-year-old John Bennett (Max Burkholder), alongside John's parents, Matty and Susan (Scott Grimes and Alanna Ubach), and cousin Blaire (Giorgia Whigham). While Ted may not be the best influence on John, he remains a steadfast companion, always ready to take risks for the sake of friendship.

A note from Seth MacFarlane, Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh:

Each generation develops its own unique artistic style, its own way of seeing the world. In the twenties, it was the subversive musical phrasings of jazz. In the fifties, it was the bold brushwork of the abstract expressionists. Our generation's unique art is streaming content based on previously successful intellectual property. In that proud tradition, we humbly give you Ted.

Our series is a prequel to the Ted movies. It takes place in the nineties but is based on the timeless truth that being sixteen sucks. The only thing that makes it tolerable is going through it with a friend, even if that friend is a has-been magical teddy bear with a foul mouth and a proclivity for drug use.

The three of us were teenagers in the nineties and grew up in and around Boston, where the show takes place, so many of these stories are personal for us. We were able to put the characters through some of the same indignities and milestones we experienced back then. Also, we made stuff up (it's a lot of pages to fill and real life is mostly boring).
