The world's longest-running children's TV show, Blue Peter, welcomes Shini Muthukrishnan as its newest presenter. Set to co-host alongside Abby Cook, Joel Mawhinney, and the charismatic Henry the dog, Shini will make her debut in a live show airing on Friday, January 19, at 5 pm on CBBC and BBC iPlayer.
Shini, a 22-year-old content creator, has garnered a substantial social media following during lockdown, celebrating her diverse British, Indian, and Malaysian heritage, with a particular fondness for Chai. Despite her young age, this marks Shini's first TV presenting role, following her recent graduation from King's College London, where she studied Philosophy, Politics & Economics.
With experience teaching children in Hong Kong during her gap year and volunteering at a youth camp in Birmingham, Shini is passionate about engaging with young minds and hopes to make a positive impact on children's lives. A perfect match for Blue Peter's focus on encouraging a love for reading, Shini is an avid reader herself, devouring an impressive total of 62 books during lockdown. Her interests also extend to playing the acoustic guitar, enjoying theatre, music, and singing.
A former badminton player for Staffordshire county for five years, Shini brings her love for adventures and sports to the iconic Blue Peter team. Excited about her new role, Shini expresses, "Being part of the Blue Peter team is such a surreal and exciting feeling. It's my first time on the big screen, and I can't wait for all the adventures to come!"
Reflecting on her own memories of Blue Peter, Shini credits the show for inspiring her fearless spirit, particularly looking up to past presenters like Helen Skelton. Shini recalls, "As a kid, I looked up to Helen Skelton; she seemed fearless on screen. She took on incredible challenges with such a headstrong attitude that made me think I can be fearless too."
For her inaugural challenge, Shini will earn her Blue Peter badge by engaging in incredible aircraft aerobatics. In the upcoming live show on January 19, viewers can expect Shini to take on the amusing task of bathing Henry the dog and whipping up a tasty treat in the Blue Peter kitchen.
Blue Peter Editor, Ellen Evans, expresses excitement about Shini joining the team, praising her adventurous spirit, sense of humor, determination, and the aspiration to positively impact children's lives. Evans notes, "As a digital creative, she's built a following online creating a fun, positive space connecting with young people, and I can't wait for the Blue Peter audience to meet Shini too!"
Produced by BBC Studios Kids & Family, Blue Peter airs every Friday at 5 pm on CBBC.
