ITV has announced the acquisition of three diverse series from Sony Pictures Television (SPT) to stream on its platform ITVX. The exciting lineup includes the British legal thriller The Killing Kind, the 1960s-set period drama Pan Am, and the animated comedy Universal Basic Guys. Each of these shows promises unique storytelling, star-studded casts, and high production quality.
The Killing Kind
Leading the charge is The Killing Kind, a gripping legal thriller produced by SPT-backed Eleventh Hour Films (Magpie Murders, Alex Rider). Based on Jane Casey's acclaimed novel, the series stars Colin Morgan (Merlin) and Emma Appleton (Traitors) in an intense game of psychological cat and mouse. Appleton plays Ingrid Lewis, a successful defence barrister whose life spirals out of control after becoming involved with her enigmatic client John Webster, portrayed by Morgan. Having defended him in a stalking case, Ingrid finds herself entangled in a complex and dangerous relationship. As she tries to rebuild her life, the death of her mentor and the sudden reappearance of Webster with a shocking claim threatens to unravel everything she has worked for. The Killing Kind promises suspense and intrigue, making it a must-watch for thriller fans.
Pan Am
Set in the glamorous world of 1960s aviation, Pan Am is a stylish drama that takes viewers back to the dawn of the jet age. Starring Christina Ricci, Margot Robbie, and Michael Mosley, the series follows the lives of Pan Am flight crew members as they navigate the shifting social values, romance, and espionage of the time. Christina Ricci plays head stewardess Maggie, a strong-willed leader who mentors the ambitious rookie Laura, played by Margot Robbie. Meanwhile, Michael Mosley portrays charming first officer Ted, who adds another layer of intrigue to the airborne drama. With a mix of luxury travel, romance, and Cold War tensions, Pan Am is set to captivate viewers when it arrives on ITVX this autumn.
Universal Basic Guys
On a lighter note, Universal Basic Guys offers a fresh take on contemporary societal issues through the lens of comedy. Created by Adam and Craig Malamut (known for Sports Friends and Game of Zones), the animated series follows two brothers, Mark and Hank Hoagies, who find themselves unemployed due to automation. In a world where they are no longer needed, the pair receive $3,000 a month as part of a new basic income programme. With this newfound financial freedom, they set off on a journey to rediscover purpose in their lives. Scheduled to premiere in the US on Fox this September, the series has already been renewed for a second season before its debut, reflecting the excitement surrounding it. Universal Basic Guys will make its ITVX debut in 2025.
ITV's Head of Content Acquisitions, Sasha Breslau, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming releases, saying, "We can't wait to bring this selection of great series to ITVX over the coming months. From stellar casts to compelling storytelling and humour – The Killing Kind, Pan Am and Universal Basic Guys will continue to strengthen our range of programming on the streaming service."
Holly Comiskey, SVP of Distribution & Networks for the UK and GSA at Sony Pictures Television, echoed the excitement, noting the variety these shows bring. "These three titles could not be more different but encompass the breadth of storytelling we love at SPT," she said. Comiskey highlighted the tension of The Killing Kind, the nostalgic allure of Pan Am, and the humour of Universal Basic Guys, ensuring there's something for every viewer on ITVX.
Premiere Dates
The Killing Kind will premiere on 12th September 2023 on ITVX and air on ITV1 from 14th September.
Pan Am will be available to stream later this autumn.
Universal Basic Guys is set to launch on ITVX in 2025.
