IGN.com Celebrates Last Ten Years of Movies and Games

IGN.com, the world’s largest video games and entertainment portal, announces its choice of Best Movies and Games of the Decade – and reveals The Dark Knight as its number 1 film of the noughties. Seminal first-person shooter sequel Half Life 2 took the Grand Prix as IGN’s most beloved video game of the last decade.

The Best Movies list includes all-time box office champ Avatar at No. 5 – alongside similarly cinematic blockbusters Lord Of The Rings: Return of the King (No. 2), Casino Royale (No. 3), Spider-Man 2 (No. 4), Batman Begins (No. 6) and 300 (No. 9).

The fact that all of these movies were box office hits, packing the full weight of big star line-ups and filled with high-octane action, thrilling special effects and state-of the art CGI (in Avatar’s case in fully immersive 3D) with enormous marketing campaigns behind them, raises questions as to what the next decade of cinema will bring – and how we will be watching films.

Chris Tilly, Movies Editor of IGN.com said “We’re very keen to see where the next wave of popular movies is going to take us in the new decade – our IGN audience clearly loves the technological advancements happening in special effects that are powering these big-hitting big screen movies. The fact that the IGN audience - consisting of gamers who love movies - is twice as likely to watch films in 3D than the general public and twice as likely to be watching HD content at home could, predict further success for these big-budget genre films in years to come.”

The early adopter movies and gaming audience on IGN.com traditionally leads the way in embracing new consumer technology and is increasingly influential in terms of spending power. This audience spends more time watching Blu-ray, favours entertainment - especially movie content - for their mobile phones and increasingly watch long form content online.

Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto III was judged to be the best representative from the celebrated and headline grabbing series by claiming fourth spot, while

Team Ico’s Shadow Of The Colossus (No. 2), Bioware’s Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic (No. 3) and Nintendo’s Super Mario Galaxy (No. 5) all featured in the top ten.

“The Best Of The Decade champions the very best of what has been a spectacular ten years for video games,” commented IGN UK Editor Alex Simmons. “When we compile the list for 2020 we expect the nature of the winning games to have evolved almost beyond recognition, with the advent of 3D and new motion controls promising an exciting future for our readers.”

By compiling a top ten of each individual year, IGN then put the winners in order for the overall prize of ‘Best Of The Decade. The Best Movies and Games of the Decade is a list compiled by the global IGN editorial team – whose work is read by 36 million users per month around the world, dedicated to Gaming and Movies.
