Case Sensitive stars OLIVIA WILLIAMS (Hanna, The Ghost, Dollhouse) as DS Charlie Zailer with DARREN BOYD (Spy, Whites) as DC Simon Waterhouse.
Hat Trick Productions is producing 2 x 60 minute episodes based on the highly acclaimed psychological suspense novels by Sophie Hannah, whose complex and original stories lend themselves perfectly to adaptation for viewers who enjoy crime drama on ITV1.
Averaging 6.0m viewers each episode and a 20% share, with a peak episode of 6.7m, the first series of Case Sensitive was 1.4m and 3 share points above this year’s average performance for Monday and Tuesday evenings in the 9 pm -10 pm slot.
Williams and Boyd are joined by PETER WIGHT (Titanic, Boy Meets Girl), RALPH INESON (Waterloo Road, The Bill, The Office), EVA BIRTHISTLE (Strike Back, Waking The Dead), THEO JAMES (Bedlam, A Passionate Woman) and EMILY BEACHAM (The Runaway, Unforgiven).
Charlie Zailer (Olivia Williams) is taking out her frustrations in a kick boxing class, where she meets Ruth (Eva Birthistle), a young music teacher. Ruth has a new boyfriend Aidan (Theo James), with whom she has fallen madly in love. She believes she can unlock Aidan’s extraordinary talent as a pianist. And when he asks her to marry him, she accepts. But there are two problems. Firstly, she is married to someone else, a fellow teacher, and secondly, Aidan has admitted that in the past he killed someone.
In turmoil Ruth asks her new gym buddy DS Charlie Zailer how she might 'help a friend' check if her partner has a criminal record of any kind. Charlie is immediately suspicious. Fearing that her new friend is in danger, and despite the opposition of her boss DCI Proust (Peter Wight), she starts to investigate, only to uncover a story of thwarted dreams and murderous jealousy...
As cracks start to show in the case and her own relationship with DC Waterhouse, (Darren Boyd), Zailer finds herself taking increasingly erratic steps to ensure she and the investigation don’t completely unravel.
Case Sensitive is filming on location in Buckinghamshire and London. The new two part story - based on the Sophie Hannah best selling novel The Other Half Lives - is adapted by Sarah Williams (Poppy Shakespeare) and directed by John Strickland (Bedlam, Bodies). The Executive Producer for Hat Trick Productions is Mark Redhead (Mutual Friends, God On Trial, Bodies, Bloody Sunday). The Producer is Rob Bullock (Wild at Heart, Monarch of the Glen).
The drama has been commissioned by Controller of Drama Commissioning Sally Haynes and ITV’s Director of Drama Commissioning Laura Mackie who comments:
“I’m thrilled to see Olivia and Darren reprising their dynamic partnership as Zailer and Waterhouse. It’s a compelling and disquieting story and Sarah Williams has delivered a superb adaptation of Sophie Hannah’s highly contemporary crime novel.”
Mark adds: "It’s great to back on another adventure with Olivia Williams and Darren Boyd as the dysfunctional duo of Charlie Zailer and Simon Waterhouse. This story combines powerful emotions and psychological intrigue with a terrifically twisty thriller story.”
