Nick Knowles’ Original Features *UK Premiere*
Weeknights, 10pm (from Monday 17th October)
Nick Knowles returns to Home to once again peel back the wallpaper and rummage in roof spaces to help homeowners unlock the genealogy and design DNA of their properties.
From a 16th century rural cottage in Somerset to a 19-room pile in Newport once at the heart of an estate, series two of Nick Knowles’ Original Features lifts the lid on the history of British houses, as their owners get to grips with how to restore them to their former glory.
Each episode features a renovation with a twist, as Nick delves into the untouched corners of a house to discover the property’s true history. As part of the couple’s journey, he also helps them to get to grips with Britain’s rich architectural history to help them bring back the house to its former glory. From Tudor and Georgian, to Deco and Doric, it’s surprising what features you can find by looking at a staircase or peeling back a panel of wallpaper.
In this series we’ll meet Gemma and Chris, who bought their Art Deco flat in Forest Hill London and love vintage clothes, furniture and accessories. On a tight budget they plan to make their first home together one that fits into their lifestyle, and Nick is on hand to help them find out more about Theodora Mabel Davies, the lady who lived in the flat from 1936-1940.
Then there’s Simon and Lesley, who have been living in the former Duke of Wellington pub in Maidstone for ten years, slowly restoring it back into a house that they can live in. The building has always been a popular destination for Americans tracing their heritage as the sons of the original owners migrated to become Mormons in Utah. But by delving deeper into the building’s history, Nick finds more about its chequered past.
As each project progresses, Nick researches the lives and times of the different families that have lived in the properties, unearthing a rich seam of social and design history that will help the couples’ not only understand more about their new home but also help with their renovation.
