The much-anticipated adaptation of Bernardine Evaristo's acclaimed novel, "Mr Loverman," is gearing up for its debut, with the BBC and Fable Pictures unveiling a star-studded ensemble cast. Set to grace screens later this year on BBC One and iPlayer, the eight-part drama promises to captivate audiences with its compelling narrative and rich characters.
Leading the cast is the incomparable Lennie James, known for his riveting performances in "Save Me" and "Line of Duty," who takes on the role of Barrington Jedidiah Walker, affectionately known as Barry. Joining him is the esteemed Sharon D. Clarke, a three-time Olivier Award winner, portraying Carmel Walker, Barry's devoted wife of five decades. Ariyon Bakare and Tamara Lawrance assume the roles of Morris De La Roux, Barry's best friend and confidante, and Maxine, the eldest daughter of the Walker family, respectively. Rounding out the family dynamic are Sharlene Whyte as Donna, Barry and Carmel's other daughter, and Tahj Miles as Daniel, their grandson.
The series also boasts an array of talented actors, including Keenan Munn-Francis and Gabin Kongolo portraying the younger versions of Barry and Morris, and Lauren Akosia as the youthful Carmel, known as Carmelita. Suzette Llewellyn, Lochlann O'Mearáin, and Hopi Grace are among the supporting cast members who add depth and nuance to the narrative.
Set against the backdrop of Hackney, London, and Antigua, "Mr Loverman" follows the journey of Barry Walker, a seventy-four-year-old Antiguan native known for his flamboyant style and zest for life. As Barry grapples with the complexities of his relationships and confronts the truth about his identity, his family is compelled to reevaluate their own lives and aspirations.
Executive Producer Faye Ward expresses her excitement for the project, highlighting the incredible talent assembled to bring Evaristo's groundbreaking exploration of the Caribbean diaspora to the screen. With Nathaniel Price at the helm as the adapter and Hong Khaou directing, the series promises to deliver a poignant and uplifting portrayal of love, family, and self-discovery.
