Sky has announced a dynamic new addition to its lineup of original series with the action-packed "Atomic." The five-part series, produced by award-winning Pulse Films and written by acclaimed screenwriter Gregory Burke, is set to begin filming this month in Morocco. The show features a star-studded cast, including Alfie Allen, Shazad Latif, and Samira Wiley, promising an exhilarating adventure that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
"Atomic" follows the gripping journey of two unlikely friends, Max (played by Alfie Allen) and Mohammed (played by Shazad Latif), as they become entangled in a Venezuelan cartel's dangerous plot to transport uranium across North Africa. The stakes are high as this uranium has the potential to fuel a nuclear bomb, posing a grave threat if it falls into the wrong hands.
Max, a free-spirited drug trafficker, and Mohammed, a man with a haunting past who is on the run, find their paths converging in the Libyan desert. Their mission takes on a global significance as they grapple with a monumental decision: save themselves or risk everything to prevent a nuclear catastrophe. Their journey is further complicated by Cassie Elliott (Samira Wiley), a highly skilled CIA agent dedicated to preventing terrorists from acquiring nuclear weapons, along with relentless MI6 agents and a network of traffickers.
The series is helmed by Shariff Korver, known for his work on "Temple" and "Do Not Hesitate," who brings his directorial expertise to this high-stakes narrative. Gregory Burke, the mind behind "'71" and "Entebbe," serves as both writer and executive producer, crafting a story inspired by the non-fiction book "Atomic Bazaar" by Vanity Fair journalist William Langewiesche. The writing team also includes Jiwon Lee, Clare McQuillan, and Ishy Din.
Burke expressed his excitement for the project, stating, "I am thrilled to bring the world of 'Atomic' to life with the brilliant director Shariff Korver and such a wonderful cast. It is a story about the terrifying prospect of a world where nuclear weapons are easier to acquire than ever before, and about the infinite possibilities that exist within the best of us and the worst of us."
Produced by Pulse Films, a VICE Studios Group company, in association with Sky Studios, "Atomic" promises to deliver a cinematic experience through the labyrinthine medinas and bustling metropolises of North Africa, across inhospitable deserts, and through hostile borders. The series will highlight the lively and unexpected camaraderie between Max and Mohammed as they navigate their way through a dangerous mission, questioning whether redemption is possible amidst the chaos.
Executive producers for the series include Jamie Hall and Judy Counihan for Pulse Films, Thomas Benski, Gregory Burke, and Sam Hoyle and Megan Spanjian for Sky Studios. Peter McAleese serves as the series producer.
"Atomic" will be available on Sky and the streaming service NOW in the UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution will handle international sales of the series.
With its compelling narrative, stellar cast, and top-tier production team, "Atomic" is set to be a must-watch series that explores the high-stakes world of nuclear trafficking and the human stories caught in its wake. Keep an eye out for its premiere on Sky and NOW later this year.
