Episodes 101 and 102 of Rodrigo Sorogoyen's romantic drama series The New Years arrive on MUBI on 3 December. They open the decade-long story with two nights that feel small on the surface yet carry a quiet charge.
Episode 101 (Jan 1, 2016). Óscar and Ana cross paths in a bar after a club has closed. He is weighed down by his recent split from Vero. She has a work visa for Canada but feels too unsure to use it. A simple chat turns into something warmer once they realise their birthdays sit side by side, Ana on 31 December and Óscar on 1 January. It is a neat little twist that gives the moment a sense of timing they both seem to recognise.
Episode 102 (Dec 31, 2016). Óscar is back with Vero. Ana has been seeing Javi for roughly five months. All four end up at the same New Years Eve party, and the night sharpens once Vero discovers what happened the previous year. It is uncomfortable, charged, and strangely inevitable.
The series itself tracks Ana, played by Iria Del Río, and Óscar, played by Francesco Carril, across ten consecutive New Years Eves. It begins on the night they both turn thirty. Ana shares a flat, feels uneasy at work, and moves through friendships quickly. Óscar is a doctor whose life seems settled until their meeting unsettles him in a different way. Each episode stays within a single night. Taken together, the years reveal how love shifts, stretches, and tests the people who choose it again and again.
