Broadcaster, barrister and author Robert Rinder MBE will oversee a cunning contest of persuasion and betrayal in The Inheritance, a new reality competition coming to Channel 4 later this year.
Thirteen strangers are summoned to a grand stately home, where they are invited to compete for a share of a fortune left behind by a flamboyant benefactor known only as The Deceased, portrayed by Elizabeth Hurley. But securing the money won't be straightforward.
The Deceased, who planned every element of the contest before her death, has laid out a series of elaborate and challenging tasks as part of her final will. These assignments are designed to test the players' intelligence, teamwork and resilience. Overseeing the terms of the will is her legal counsel and executor, played by Rinder, who ensures the late benefactor's instructions are followed precisely.
Despite working together to complete each task, only one contestant can claim the reward from each challenge. It's up to them to persuade the group that they alone deserve the money. The game rewards not just cooperation, but also cunning negotiation and social strategy.
Described as "a high-stakes strategy game served with a side of scheming and sabotage" by Rinder, the format blends competition with character-driven drama. Hurley said: "It's a thrill to be part of this clever game, playing The Deceased; it all takes place on her huge estate in the English countryside and she dresses to the nines in every scene."
With its stylised setting, competitive tension and theatrical flair, The Inheritance offers a twist on the traditional game show. Viewers can expect shifting alliances, persuasive showdowns and no shortage of surprises.
The Inheritance will air on Channel 4 in autumn 2025.
