NEWS: Maureen Lipman to star in Coronation Street


Acclaimed British actress Maureen Lipman CBE has joined the cast of Coronation Street.

Maureen will play Tyrone Dobb’s grandma Evelyn Plummer, she comes into his life after he decides to research his family history following the recent death of his mum Jackie.

Outspoken battleaxe Evelyn will soon be ruling the roost at number 9 much to Fiz’s dismay and it isn’t long before she starts to ruffle a few feathers on the Street.

Coronation Street Producer Iain MacLeod said: 
“I am beyond thrilled that we are introducing such a great new character, played by someone of Maureen’s pedigree. Evelyn is eye-wateringly withering and will add a fresh dollop of northern humour to the show as she turns Tyrone and Fiz’s lives upside down.”

Maureen is currently appearing in new a one woman show at Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Maureen Lipman is ‘Up For It’ is playing the Assembly George Square Theatre until 12th August.

Maureen has starred in many films including Roman Polanski’s award winning film The Pianist, Educating Rita and Oklahoma. She has appeared in TV series such as All at Number 20, The Fugitives and Plebs. She is also remembered for her role as Beatie in the 1980s BT Adverts. Maureen made a brief appearance in Coronation Street in 2002 as snooty landlady Lillian Spencer. Her theatre credits include over twenty five West End productions including the award winning Oklahoma with Hugh Jackman. Of her ten humorous books, How Was it for You? remains the most popular.

Evelyn will make her debut on the cobbles in September, further details of how Tyrone finds his grandma are being kept under wraps until her first appearance.
